SimonNo10 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 (edited) Hi guys. As much as I want to build a dedicated HT room I simply cant afford to do it so I've been looking at optimizing my existing room and making it the best it can be. To fully utilise the room and space I believe that getting In-Wall speakers for the front stage such as the Krix Megaphonix would allow me to go a slightly larger screen (current is 100" 16:9), and have a better uniform sounding front stage. Unfortunately the room leads to an open area (dining) on the right which cant be changed unless I have a wall installed which would then block the main Split system from cooling the room, and left side opens to a hallway. I'm really open to ideas on how to maximise the current room to better improve the sound plus making it feel more like a dedicated room if that's even possible. Please refer to pictures of the room as it stands now. Equipment will remain the same it's just the speakers that I believe will need changing (front stage and surrounds), currently I'm using 4 Krix Stratospherix for Atmos (ceiling) and the front stage are the Powersound Audio MTM-210's and the surrounds are the MT-110's and the back channels are JTR Slanted 8's. The idea is that all these speakers will be replaced with Krix Megaphonix speakers as I want everything matching and I really like the Krix sound and the room is used for movies. Projector is the JVC N5 4K. Room dimensions approx are: L: 4.8m x W: 3.5m, length is from the back wall to the front wall but main listening position would be a approx 4.2m. Having In-Wall front speakers would allow me to go a bigger screen but would need to calculate distance from projector to the screen as to optimise screen size from main listening position and go a 16:9 or a Cinescope screen which would require using the zooming method or save up for a MAD VR. Not shown in pics the but the room does have acoustic treatment panels on both sides plus 3 diffusor on the ceiling. Edited February 16, 2022 by SimonNo10
Snoopy8 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 (edited) I note your have a Trinnov, so not much to improve in that direction! For the room, have you considered a black velvet curtain on the right to block off the dining room? Maybe even one on the left? Also perhaps paint the front wall background black? Unless you are prepared to put in big bass traps, I suspect that other room treatments will give only minor, if any, audible improvements. Not sure how many subs you have, but dual subs will definitely improve the HT experience. And have you tried using a +6dB target curve for the sub in Dirac Live? Am using all Monitor Audio speakers (+ SVS subs) for my HT in open plan family room (but cannot get away with using curtains to close off kitchen!). I believe that having tonally matched speakers helps with the audio. The difference is noticeable with multi channel music. Less so for movies, but it is there. So, explore changing all speakers to Krix. Edited February 16, 2022 by Snoopy8 Typo
SimonNo10 Posted February 16, 2022 Author Posted February 16, 2022 (edited) Thanks for the reply. I’ve considered curtains for those areas so will investigate options. In regards to subs Im running a singular T-18 Powersound Audio (3x18” drivers) and it’s plenty for that room. As noted I’m using a Trinnov ALT16 and that doesn't use Dirac Live but their own calibration software which is very complex and highly configurable and has transformed the sound of my system. This direction is more cosmetic rather than making it more acoustically better, other than changing to Krix for their mounting options (Speakers behind the screen) plus being more oriented towards movies rather than multi channel music which I do occasionally listen to (SACD), but it accounts to like 5% of my listening. in regards to a black wall, it’s already painted in a dark colour (Dulux Brood) and the ceiling is painted in grey. If I have In-Wall speakers then I’ll be able to go a slightly larger screen which will cover most of that screen wall anyway. Edited February 16, 2022 by SimonNo10
Ed369 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 I think you can pull the centre out as much as possible, then apply some sound deadening to the room including floor and ceiling. Helicopter fly above my head, bullet right on my face since I installed acoustics
Ed369 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 For the opening area, try acoustics panel on wheels? 1
Ed369 Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 For HT feeling, maybe install a star light ceiling with sound rating insolation
hopefullguy Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 i will guess you are talking about the on wall Krix Megaphonix "flat" speakers? that sliding door is a pain but as you do have space, as per distance the 210 sticks out in the pics, why not build a false wall end and do an A/T screen. the flat krix will sit nicely behind it, you can go 120" or basically the full available wall. it will be a cleaner front stage, add a non shiny black front rug, black curtain on the left to cover a shiny white door and a right one for balance. do in stages until happy with things then stop and enjoy.

I believe Krix have both In-Wall Megaphonix and On-Wall. The On-Wall option (preferred) with the false wall is a great idea as well as the curtains and rug. A good project for sure but I’m not a DIY or handy with tools etc so I’d need someone that can build that false wall.
hopefullguy Posted February 17, 2022 Posted February 17, 2022 the false wall may sound daunting but research my friend will always give simple options.. i will be using ideas from this man, copied and modified to suit many many times on AVS forums https://www.avsforum.com/threads/minimalist-approach-to-screen-wall.837848/#post-10364243 if not a diy then a handyman should be able to do easily.
