Hell yes. I doubt I could even find anyone over here that would even do a small one off job like that. A veritable bargain.

Janus77 Posted March 14, 2022 Author Posted March 14, 2022 I've been trying to get a couple of pieces, or 1 piece of veneer, but they've taken a couple of weeks to "look in the warehouse to see what we have". Anyone have a good veneer place in Sydney they can recommend? I only need to veneer the front baffles.
Janus77 Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 (edited) Veneer ordered today, am going with a Sapele which seems to have a nice reddish tone that'll contrast nicely with the black sides and drivers. Ended up buying from Australian Premier Veneers after the Sydney based company i'd enquired with stopped responding. Edited March 15, 2022 by Janus77 1

Sometimes its called Mahogany depending on where it comes from, its part of the Mahogany family. It polishes up really nice and has a great reddish brown color. I use it quite often as part of my pen turning and bowls. Its a little hard to get hold of at times but its really nice timber. Should look really nice on the front baffle. kiwilistener Posted March 19, 2022 Posted March 19, 2022 Here's another thought provoking and highly interesting interview from one of my favorite reviewers, interviewing the speaker designer. New Retro Mission speakers, well worth the watch and also echo's a lot of my own design ethos in speaker design where you combine a lot of listening coupled with crossover design. Its why I spend hours on the design of a crossover and then spend hours doing listening tests. Done right you hopefully dont need to adjust the crossover elements. 1
Janus77 Posted March 27, 2022 Author Posted March 27, 2022 (edited) Veneer arriving today, CNC'd MDF arriving Wednesday. I purchased a nail gun on Friday afternoon, looks like an easier way to attach panels when gluing - at least for MDF where i'll bog, sand and paint them anyway. Just need to keep the nail far enough in that i don't hit them when rounding the corners. Ok ok, i wanted a new toy and these seem like they'd be useful. I've also ordered a Minidsp 2x4HD and 4 x Wondom 30w mono amps (https://store.sure-electronics.com/product/AA-AB31471). All set to arrive this week. It's coming together people, keen to get the boxes knocked up and do some testing Edited March 27, 2022 by Janus77 2

I will never forget PC comment while at Warfedale that I've seen repeated so much. Quote Most people think that a flat frequency response is the goal of a good loudspeaker design. I quickly found out that it wasn’t, at least not just on its own, and that the balance between the loudspeaker drive units and the crossover that tied them together was far more important. This is the most confusing statement for anyone learning about speakers, acoustics, and design. "The balance between the drive untils and the crossover that tied them together" .... is just another way of saying "the frequency response". They are just two sides of the same coin. The response of the speaker. It's all just another way of saying that when you match drivers and design filters to blend them together... than you need to arrive at a flat (or whatever the target is, it doesn't have to be literally flat) frequency response. 3
Janus77 Posted March 28, 2022 Author Posted March 28, 2022 I found the talk on cabinet resonance interesting. Not being able to eradicate them, instead you push the resonance into a frequency range which is less impactful on the listening experience. Makes sense. also the Mission 770 had a different resonance on the left and right sides of the cabinet, so they'd clearly done a bit of work in this regard. How would you go about measuring cabinet resonance, is there some kind of tool you can attach to a surface to measure it, or can a calibrated microphone be used - and you just measure where distortion increases in a response sweep?

Janus77 Posted March 28, 2022 Author Posted March 28, 2022 Veneer and minisdp arrived. Will look good with some Danish oil. 2

You can often see them reflected in the electrical impedance of the driver in cabinet (vs. the electrical impedance of the driver out of the cabinet) .... but the 'resolution' is low. 1

Janus77 Posted March 29, 2022 Author Posted March 29, 2022 glad i purchased my jigsaw, there are 2 2400x1200 particle boards they used for top and bottom packaging in our foyer - need to break them down. Seems like a waste but i guess they need to protect the pieces from rain etc during transport.
Janus77 Posted March 30, 2022 Author Posted March 30, 2022 (edited) Loving the nail gun, knocking that box up was so easy! Edited March 30, 2022 by Janus77 1
Janus77 Posted March 30, 2022 Author Posted March 30, 2022 Will knock up the 2nd box today if i have time. I've got a delivery coming from speakerbug with 8mm felt to line the interiors, and some wire and speaker binding posts. Hopefully the 4 x mono amps arrive today/tomorrow so i can get the testing rig working. 1
