Luc Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Just got back off the beach. Feed of whiting and flathead in the esky. Time to fillet em now. Madness down on my beach at the moment with Qlders everywhere breaking all the rules; Bring the dogs!(no dogs allowed fines apply),drive this way(No entry bird sanctuary fines apply),no motorbikes so there are bikes on the beach(fines apply),lets park up in the dunes and drive over the dune flora&fauna(no parking or driving above high tide line. Fines apply), lets not slow down to lawful speed(30K's fines apply), lets not slow down when approaching parked cars(fines apply) and then the big one..."I didn't know you needed a fishing licence." "I didn't know you were only allowed 20 pipi's or 20 worms or only ten fish in my possession" I saw the rangers on the beach, they're going to have a field day.
Cafad Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Double figures on the flatties... nice! I'm about to throw some of yesterdays catch on the BBQ, honey soy marinated trevors, I'll be thinking of pan fried flatties though (damn you!). Did you get a pic of the whiting?

I deliberately left them off the brag mat! They were barely legal and had swallowed the hooks so I had to keep em. @A J Noice Kingy mate! Love fishing in NZed Edited December 30, 2014 by Luc
Guest Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Boat made its maiden voyage today. It floats! Success. Threw a few plastics around for nil result sadly. Next trip out will be hardcore fishing though. This was just a boat shake down. Jealous of all the pics being put up already though
Sierra Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Hmmm ... all this fish talk has giving me a hankering for fish fingers

As long as your non-success is restricted to before I show we won't have a problem! Hmmm ... all this fish talk has giving me a hankering for fish fingers Marc's right - peasant fodder, keep it clean Al! 1
Cafad Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Fish fingers are not fish!!! Nor are they fingers, so, if you think about it, they are really poorly named. 1
evil c Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 As a follow up to my fishing holiday in Narooma I regret to report that the "fishing Gods" were unkind - with the whole area virtually shutting down catch wise for the vast majority of anglers! On a brighter note I managed to extract some sort of a result from the slim pickings with a nice bag one day during the week in the surf of Salmon, Mullet, few Rays & a 90cm Shovel-nose Shark! Next day was quiet but on my final cast before calling it a day I picked up a good size Flattie, also in the surf. @@Marc , who was also staying nearby managed to sneak off from nappy changing/ child minding duties and we both spent the morning flogging the surf for no result in the bag (other than a small Flattie I threw back). The next day after he pleaded and begged (and negotiated a deal) with his missus - he picked me up and we hit the local lake on his new pride and joy boat. Up till now having seen no physical evidence of this bragged about boat after nearly a week (photo-shopped pic I thought ) so imagine my surprise when our illustrious leader arrived towing it! After being assured every lure cast would result in a hook up - we settled into peppering the whole lake with a variety of soft plastics, while I being less a "plastic purist" than Marc covered more bases with a baited chunk of Squid tossed out on the drift. Much to Marc's delight - my Squid rig buckled over and started peeling off line and after an enjoyable battle I managed to land a 40cm Snapper! After a few brief strikes over the entire time on the water and being treated to fish jumping all around us in a show of contempt we decided to call it a day licking our (read his) wounds! We still had a good time on his extremely well decked out boat (I christen thee Marc's Ark) which hopefully he will be getting out on more often this year with me offering catching tips! So to sum up - it doesn't matter where you go and how good the fishing normally is, (the week before arrival) things can shut down until after you leave. The only method to achieve success is spending many hours with a line in the water like I did - and sneak off early in the morning before the missus gets up and plans your days (non fishing) activities!!.
Guest Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Was great to get on the water, and to have my ear chewed off by the evil one. The fishing was the worst I have seen in many years fishing the area sadly. Apparently on fire the week before, and no doubt red hot now we've left! The warm currents coming down from the north saw the water temp rising to 27 degrees (the highest I've ever seen in the lakes/inlets) which at those temps lowers the oxygen levels in the water. The fish would be conserving their energy and feeding only when necessary. Hoping to get back up next month and make up for this trip!
A J Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 The "lip-gripper" bigger than the fish!! - think you might have to institute some house rules
evil c Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 The "lip-gripper" bigger than the fish!! - think you might have to institute some house rules Actually I forgot to hold the fish out from my body toward the camera as many do to accentuate it's size - and my big paws dwarfed it a tad as well!
A J Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Haha - any day fishing beats a day at work - I have a trip booked for the 20th - I'll be sure to post some pics. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
A J Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Auckland - just out in the Hauraki Gulf. It's been on fire this season snapper-wise.
Luc Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Geez doesn't Master Evil look happy with his squire or is it called a pinky being that far south? 40cm, it's got a long tail then? Heading down Thu, will report back on success or not. Mates have been catching really nice Murray cod at Glen Lyon Dam over the weekend, a bunch of them on deep divers at just below the 1m mark...nice fish in anyones language and all put back to get even more fatter.

Alright I confess!! Rounded up from 38cm (officially measured by Marc) and cooked up yesterday by yours truly feeding 4 people! edit: Pity @@Luc wasn't there so I could have out-fished him!
Guest Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Boat is packed, rods, lures and plastics are in. Heading to Narooma, Tuross, Moruya and a few other spots for hardcore fishing over the next 14 days. Only thing seperating us is a 9.5hr drive Chasing an elusive Jewie, or trying to crack the 1m mark for a flattie. Should be fun. There WILL be fish, and there WILL be pics! Stay tuned. 1
evil c Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Yeah yeah @@Marc - we're all really happy we're getting rid of you, I mean that you can have a few weeks off while we have to work! Best of luck this time & I'll expect to be going on the next fishing sojourn! 1
Cafad Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I just had a phone call from my old man. Apparently it was a great day out on the water back home in Bowen. He and my uncle filled up both the fish and bait eskies and were throwing fish back by the end of the trip. 37 edibles he claims, reckoned he could have broken 50 if they'd kept all of the trevally, he called just before 6pm with the boat unwashed and his hands cramped from filleting. So... I guess I'm buying him an extra esky for Fathers Day.
Cafad Posted September 8, 2015 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) I love a week off work. How's everyone else doing? I'm not sure if anyone is keeping score but that was 23 and 25 pounds for the 2 spanish on the right, 11 for one on the left, 5 for the doggy and we didn't bother weighing the sweetlip. Got over 18kg of fillets in the end. Edited September 10, 2015 by Cafad 3
