That is a fabulous catch.  SNA fishing tours- count me in....

It has been years since I have fished - East coast around Sydney has been fished out for a long time.  By the time I count the cost of bait, tackle, petrol time it is way cheaper to go to the fish markets.

Anyone out there interested in starting a thread on fishing? Yes, I know there are a number of fishing forums but I have not seen one where there is the odd mention of valve amplifiers as well, so perhaps we can have one here? I have returned to an early interest in the activity during the Victorian lockdown. We had relocated to Inverloch prior to the lockdown and have for very good reasons decided to stay for the duration. Damn good fishing here and have friends here who are mad keen. The elder Baby Mustud is living with us here as well and has also taken up the pursuit. Today was a good day with landing whiting (a little early this year), tailor and flathead, all on yabbie.

So, any fans of Shimano?

Long time no see,  long time fishing enthusiast but less last few years - but feeling quite keen to hit anything with water !

Lucky you, nice part of the world and have fished around there several times over the years.

Would have several Shimano reels kicking around here!

Resident tube amplifier in the rack too! ?

I was lucky. All my old gear was...well, old. Also, it was in Melbourne. So I decided to get new gear.  Surprised at the relative affordable prices for even pretty serious stuff. Well, compared to audio, anyway. For example, love the new Shimano Stradic FL reels. Won't go on about the gear as it makes me just a gear junkie.

Early start this morning, pelted with rain when we pumped yabbies but the scenery was just super across the sand flats looking across Anderson's Inlet at near low tide. Then went out again as high tide came in with the sun shining. Ah, fresh fish and salad just picked from our veggie garden. Damn fine!

Yeah still have a soft spot for the old Aerocast reels but know the Stradic - very nice.

Sounds like a perfect day!

Hey guys. I'm getting back into the fishing after 17 years since my last catch but was very keen as a teenager with a very well regarded (ex) brother in law who taught me pretty well.

Youngest daughter is mad keen to catch something. We went up to Taggerty for Australia day weekend but the rivers were so busy with people and the weather so hot, we came back fishless and minus a few lures! I've resurrected my 2 old rods but the reels didn't survive living in a moist garage. I bought a Sedona 2500FI for the daughters rod which I think will do her for any thing she is likely to catch, spooled with 6lb mono.

I got a SLX XT 150 spooled with 6lb braid/Flouro leader matched to my old 6' baitcaster rod. Never fished with braid before and the connecting knots are bloody hard to do. Hope it gets better with practice as I don't think I could do one when out fishing. Even with advances in tech I've totally lost my casting ability and accuracy too. Lots of minor birds nests and lucky if it goes where I aimed.

Anyhoo, I've decided to get myself a light spinning set up for Trout, Flatties, Whiting, Bream etc. Pretty much set on a Shimano Vanford CI4+ in a 2500 size, but wonder which rod to match it with? Are Uglystik still well regarded? Diawa? Shimano? Budget around $250-$300 for the rod but happy to spend less. Again, I used to prefer a faster action rod but has rod tech gone away from that? Watching youtube vids like ifish lost of rods are bending virtually from the reel seat.

If the bug catches for good I'll also add a surf set up coming towards next summer.

Buying gear is half the fun. I spent over $300 a few weeks ago just replenishing my tackle and getting a tackle backpack instead of the old box with top handle

Ugly Stik is old and heavy and strong.

Have a look at the Shimano Squidgie series for some good value modern light tackle rods.

There are a couple of 7' spinning rods that would suit your intended use well. Either the light or medium depending on your intended cast weight and line breaking strain. These are intended for fishing with lures, esp. soft plastics.

Cheers for that. Think the 7'3" might give me better flexibility with lure/soft plastic weights as well as bait fishing. BCF guy recommended a 1/6 oz jig heads for Flathead soft plastics which is almost 5g already.

Good to see this thread resurrected - I was flat out until I got totalled on my vespa the first week of the new year - here’s a few snaps prior to that

I have worked my way through a few rods and  now really enjoy the Shimano Zodias. 7'  20ZOD270MH. Teamed with a Stradic FL Compact 3000HG. Fun to use even when you aren't catching fish. Great feel. I fish off the beach at Inverloch.

But I'm not a gear junkie. I just have four late model rods, four late model reels and lots of fun stuff in my tackle box.es). But no way am I a gear junkie. No siree. Nope. And I never talk about gear with other fisher folk. No way.

Enjoy.

So I'll be down at the Powlett River Caravan park in a few weeks. I'm told there are plenty of juvenile bream in the system (on chicken fillet apparently :o) which will be great for my daughter, but where should I go to get flatties down that way... Got to supply dinner if I can.

The Zodias look awesome and the 7' light might just be exactly what I'm after. I'm more fishing for a bit of fun but also filling the fridge, so not looking to go after big stuff. Been there done that. Caught a 40kg Yellowfin Tuna as a 16yo, which was fun at the time, but I don't feel I'll get that serious

So Complete Angler have hold of my folding. Now the proud owner of a Stradic FL 2500 HG (12lb braid and 8lb Flouro leader) paired with a 7' 6" Shimano Matador Elite. This is a Complete Anglers exclusive rod but from what they tell me it is similar to a Shimano squidgie but with an extra layer low in the blank for a bit more pulling power and cork grips. It's a 2-4kg rod rated to cast 3-12gr which should suit my mixed light tackle needs well.

Heading out to Altona Pier this Saturday to try our luck with my girls. SWMBO has ordered a freezer full of flathead tails so I need to teach my girls how to jig soft plastics.

Perfect looking light outfit - I use 2500 Stradics a lot and I’ve pulled 15kg fish in with them and hooked a fair few sharks and stingrays. They are a lovely piece of kit.

Anyone in the know for good rods for fishing off a boat? I'm after a good rod to use mainly in inland freshwater lakes around Western Victoria. The boat is 20 foot so plenty of room. I haven't fished for years and even then, it was usually off a bank or jetty. Is there a brand/size I should be looking for?
