AvSat44 Posted March 22, 2022 Posted March 22, 2022 While I have been a member for a while, I only recently decided to try my luck and list a few items "For Sale". I've had a number of members view my items and even comment on them which is something I find appealing (the commentary, that is). On two occasions in a very short time I have been contacted by supposed buyers who are interested and want to buy. This happens over a numerous conversations that can go on for weeks. They finally respond with their offer which is usually less than the listed price (I can live with that) and then they ask if they can pick it up "tomorrow" to which I agree, only to then discover that, as they say in the movies, "the line went dead". As soon as you suggest going to a method of direct communication to complete the sale, you don't hear from them again because it exposes them by showing an email address or phone number. I don't see the point in anyone wasting their time just to muck you around. I've started checking the history of these members and have noticed that they have only been members for a short time, they don't participate in forums (not that its compulsory), they don't place anything in the classifieds or participate in any other way. Am I being paranoid about this? I've moved stuff from Gumtree to avoid this sort of thing but it seems these scammers are everywhere.

There's the community members here (which are fantastic), then there is those that only use it for the classifieds. Honestly I would happily take a lower price to sell to a known member myself. 9
AvSat44 Posted March 22, 2022 Author Posted March 22, 2022 Agree with your comments. And the only way to get to know members is to participate.
cafe67 Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 (edited) No to mention, those gimps* that jump straight in with "what's your best price?" Yeah the one I advertised it at,is the best price for me * happens not just here of course Edited March 25, 2022 by cafe67 2 2
wasabijim Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 maybe they just wanna tell their pub mates, "yeah I was gonna grab <<XYZ>> for 50c, but nah..." it's sometimes hard to tell if its intentional or just... poor social form?? but frustrating all the same. You sometimes have wonder if scammers would be better putting their efforts into a legitimate enterprise, they'd probably have more honest $$ to show for it and a better nights sleep 1
emesbee Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 (edited) It is certainly disappointing to hear that sort of thing going on. I have never sold anything on SNA but have bought a few items from other SNA members from time to time. First contact has always been via PM, usually followed up with private phone and possibly email correspondence. My attitude has always been that I am prepared to pay what both parties would agree is a fair and reasonable price for the item being sold, rather than trying to knock them down to the lowest price possible. I have also only bought from people who have been fairly long term SNA members (which I am too), so I guess there is a degree of trust that has been built up over time. audiofeline Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 And I believe that the classifieds guidelines gives the seller discretion on who they choose to sell an item to and who they choose not to sell to. I think it is reasonable not to sell to new members who haven't become part of the community and have an unknown reputation.
eman Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 I have bought and sold a few things here. Sometimes minor price negotiations. Never a problem. Usually only comms through SNA and posted either way. Pickup from me once that might have involved mobile phone txt.
Jventer Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 I have bought and sold on SNA (as well as Gumtree, Facebook and Ebay). Most of the members here are fantastic to deal with and I prefer buying and selling here as part of the community. Selling here and then donating also helps with expenses of running SNA. When there were little issues a couple of times re buying and selling it was mostly from members that were not that active, but then I have had good dealings with new and not that active members as well. I am sorry that the OP has had not so good experiences.
eLicky Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 You're not immune to time waster and can kickers here but compared to sites like Gumtree and facebook marketplace selling here is really quite decent. Most are happy to pay without haggling (the prices are already good) and sales go smoothly. I don't understand these people who enquire about an item then take off for 24-48 hours before replying, I understand people have busy lives but sometimes its makes me scratch my head. If you've ever tried selling on Gumtree its 80% time wasters and low ballers, its only that other 20% that keeps you listing there. And don't even get me started about facebook marketplace. We're doing alright here in these regards, but you'll never be 100% immune because morons exisit. 7
BLAH BLAH Posted July 21, 2022 Posted July 21, 2022 I always think I'm selling my stuff at a reasonable price on Stereonet...but gee sometimes I am mistaken! 1
AvSat44 Posted July 21, 2022 Author Posted July 21, 2022 Know exactly how you feel, although you can pick any of the other selling sites and you'll find that SNA has hardly any low ballers compared to others. I'm also happy to make a contribution if I sell anything rather than be slugged up around 14% of the sale price by that other site. As for the freebie sites, well judge for yourself. Of course here you also have forum heaven which makes it a pleasure to just jump on. 2

I've often had to deal with, 'what's the lowest you can go?' - before any inspection and sometimes not even having heard that type of equipment... or even being familiar with it. I usually reply just out of courtesy but I have to say that I'm getting fed up with this sort of arrogance. My response is becoming more and more along the lines of 'How high can you go?' 6 1 1

If you're listing on Gumtree and facebook I put this at the very top of the listing in brackets. (The price is $500, offers lower won't be accepted) This has stopped low ballers and random offers by 80%. And when they send you these low ball offers, do not reply to them, ignore them completely. If there's one thing I've learnt on the Internet is people hate being ignored, its the best response you can give. 'What is your best price' is an instant delete the message for me. A little discount is OK, but when these people are trying to normalise offers 50% of your asking price we need to put our foot down, it can't be allowed to happen. Edited July 30, 2022 by eLicky 6
hlov Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 (edited) I have bought and sold few things here, my experience has been 99% great and can’t recall many low ballers. Actually became good mates with some of the sellers of buyers mostly because they also participate in the forum threads. The reality is that is not easy to sell unneeded staff unless you want to go eBay which IMHO is the biggest ripoff for sellers so my advise is to see this as other way to advertise something that you have to offer, it might or it might not sell. Phill451 Posted August 22, 2022 Posted August 22, 2022 I’ve bought a few things over the years on stereonet. It has always been easy and I always thought I got value for money from genuine people. Admittedly I tend to favour those who have been here a while and contributed. I am always a bit surprised by the strong negative reaction some people have to a bit of bargaining around price but each to their own.

Its more often than not, the time wasting aspect of it. Stuffing around for multiple messages with multiple people who are working in $50 increments. And while less common here, more a Gumtree/FB thing, they get their mates to show fake interest too and a few low balls. Some you can see on their FB profile they are all mates. The worst are the ones that show up with not enough cash to cover the negotiated price. I send them home on principle. I now have a lower limit, below that items are free. I'm self employed and better off working than haggling. And you meet some very nice and grateful people. Edited August 22, 2022 by DrSK

Fair enough, I must have been lucky in buying and selling, some genuine haggling but no stupid games or ridiculous schemes.
