Couple retire on cruise ship to avoid cost of living on land

"When Angelyn Burk, a recently retired accountant, decided to crunch some numbers one evening last year, she made a stunning discovery: It would be cheaper for her and her husband to spend their retirement perpetually aboard cruise ships than to continue living on land.

"This is how I want to retire," Angelyn, 53, decided in that moment. "Life is too short."

She turned to her husband, Richard Burk, and said: "We can do this. Let's make cruise ships our home."

To her delight, he was onboard. The couple had thoroughly enjoyed the nearly 10 cruises they had been on together in the past, and they have a mutual love for travel as well as a shared disdain for airports.

They looked online and determined that, on average, they could string together voyages on various cruise ships for markedly less money than their collective cost of living on land. All they had to do was hop from ship to ship with some small breaks in between.

"We calculated that we can probably live reasonably well with about $100 a day together, with what we've saved up," said Richard, 51, who retired as a computer programmer last month.

"It became a no-brainer," said Angelyn, who resigned from her accounting job in 2019, and briefly bartended before the pandemic.~"

They couldn't pay me enough to spend the rest of my life on a cruise ship... I'll save purgatory for when I'm dead...

oh not for us either .. but it does make think.. no more rates.. no more power bills, no more home insurance, car insurance, cars ? no more worrying about anything going on the blink or home maintenance etc etc .... cost of living is spiralling up to point .. i do wonder at what point will things get too ..that cant afford to retire ...

even rates bother me .. councils and rising property prices just sends rates to keep climbing .... if its family home its something stuck with ...at what point does it become that cant afford to pay the rates (it becomes like a rent) to stay in own place ?

You could buy your own boat and live on that.  Basically the same advantages. :)

Use sails my friend.  Free air power.  Only need to pull it out of the water from time to time to scrape off a few barnacles.  Sailing the free ocean waves, not a worry in the world :)

Aaaargh rates!! Can’t believe our local council.

And what’s with home insurance hikes this year? (Over 20% here) time to shop around.

Pity you can’t do it with rates.

I didn't think rates plus maintenance on a home could be 20k+ a year like even what is modest rent these days

But then I rent so I only see that side fully.

I've advised plenty of old bastards sitting around doing nothing but supporting cocaine sniffing BMW driving super fund managers to do just this!

4 to 5 years until retirement for me, I have 2 super funds, of which 1 I cannot touch as it is governed by QROPS, that has taken about 8% hit whereas my other hasn't fared so badly.

There is only one day in your life that is happier than the day you pick up your new boat, the day you sell it.

Still a lot more expensive than looking after a house. Yes, some people don't mind spending a couple of days out of harbour, but then you have to go back in for food, water and generally power. And then you get hit by mooring fees (yikes!). And it's not like you can 'sail around the world' as there's quite a few places that you simply disappear...and I don't mean the Bermuda Triangle.
