Ooogh Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 Greetings all. I am looking to buy an affordable 32 or 40 inch TV. Our ancient set top box has given up the ghost and it is time to move into the brave new world of modern technology. What do I need it to do? Well watch TV is a good start , sport that doesn’t have that motel room pixilated blurred vision is a must. I would like to be able to watch YouTube as well, plug in an XBox , old tech like a VCR and run audio out. Absolutely no interest in anything Samsung, bought an expensive one, blew up after 9 months , got a whole new screen and it blew up again 6 months later! Took a peak at the Hisense A4G in 32” and 40” sizes, the Akai Series 6 in a 32” and the TCLs in the same price bracket. To my eye the Hisense and Akai were very similar but the TCL picture quality appeared lower. As always pretty easy to sell the TV you want in a store, just muck up the colour and contrast on the opposition. Anyway, looking for advice from those who understand the world of modern TV’s. Cheers.
Fawks Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 My only tip would be to try find a manufacture that includes error codes. I have an older Panasonic and it has a big list of error codes it throws out depending on what it thinks is wrong, Has saved me in the past. I can say the cheap kogan t.v's are garbage. 1

I have a 65 inch in the lounge. Wish I went 75 inch. I have a 43 inch in the bedroom. Wish I went 55 inch. You also mention sport. If you want to stream Kayo you might look for android OS. We have lived with a 32” Tele for years so very accustomed to a small set, however I may well go with the 40”. Seems that Hisense is the go to brand in cheaper TVs.
lebowski Posted May 21, 2022 Posted May 21, 2022 we have a couple of Hisense TV’s and very happy with them. Good bang for buck and once calibrated they perform well. Had one fail after 4 years and 1 year out of warranty, I contacted their Customer Service and put forward my case and they replaced the TV with a new one. 1

That is the type of customer service story I like to hear. Anything good enough for the Big Lebowski has to be worth a spin. Cheers 1
GregWormald Posted May 22, 2022 Posted May 22, 2022 If this is going to be your main TV then I have to agree with the majority here—go bigger! lots bigger! (unless you sit really close). I had a HiSense 45" that was excellent, and is still going strong at a friend's place. The 65" Sony is MUCH nicer. While the picture and sound are better than the HiSense the size difference is a major step up, even though I too was used to smaller sets. The big TV takes no time to "get used to". 1

Cheers Greg, The thing here is the best spot for the TV is on the side wall and we swing it out to watch. Unfortunately this is right where my left hand speaker sits so space is tight, a big chunk of TV just won’t really fit. No use putting it at the end of the room, the Budgies will kill me if I move their jungle gym! Finally I am a cheap b#stard and want to spend as little as possible.
Super Mustud Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 sounds like the only thing stopping you getting a bigger tv is having to shift to a bigger place or doing an extension. Have you given these first steps any consideration? 1

Since the TV is way off centre from the speakers, what's the objection to the TV coming out and covering the speaker? (I realise I may be pushing size, but going to a 45" HiSense from a 25" tube, and then to a 65" made TV much more enjoyable and easier all around. Sorry.) 1

Hi Greg, no problem covering the front of the speaker, the problem is the lack of space to pivot the TV past the speaker without bashing into the wall or the speaker. Speakers are ideally positioned and the next bit of wood behind the plaster that I can screw into for the mount just doesn’t work as a viewing position. None of this is a massive stress for us, we will just live with a small TV. However I think I can cram a 43” Tele in and make clearance, especially as they seem to have much slimmer surrounds now. No interest in a bigger house, but a big chunk of land would be fantastic, then we could keep a heard of these little beauties. https://petkeen.com/do-miniature-goats-make-good-pets/

Greetings Betty, or maybe I will indeed call you Al. Agreed there are very few 40” TVs , most are 43” but Hisense make the A4G and A4HAU in a 40” size. Heaven knows why, they certainly appear to be an odd size compared to most of what is available. Cheers Amigo 1
