I got a question about some cables I listed for auction on ebay. The person asked me whether they're genuine or a fake made in China. How would I verify this? I bought them here on SNA a few years ago and they didn't have any packaging or anything.

Like with anything faked, you would need to know how to spot the differences yourself before you could be 100% sure - especially if you didn't buy it from an authorized dealer.

I know this isn't helpful, but it's the only way you will know for sure.

Try comparing it with the real deal if you have access to any...

but ey it's cables what difference will it make anyway 🤪

First pic of fake same model reads

Hul van den on the plugs

Van den HUL on the leads

Does it have a plasticky feel?

Originals more rubbery feel

Bottom pic of genuine off VDH website

You could try sending pics to VDH, see if they can authenticate

Apparently the ink script on the fakes bleeds and becomes indistinct over time, even with the lightest of rubbing, plus the V in VAN isn't emphasized on the fakes, its lower case.

Well that was the case, if newer Fakes have changed this is unknown.

When I was checking them a few years back, I came across some info.

I think the fakes have a capital "V" in van at the start written on the cables. Originals have a lower case letter. Though this may have changed since then.

Also searching on Stereonet I see the connectors can be different if you unscrew the outside metal part to expose the inside of the connector.

The pics on the Clef HiFi and the Carlton Audio Visual websites shows "Made in EU" clearly printed in the cable sheath, whereas the ones on the AliExpress site don't have this.

Actually now looking at the Van Del hul cables for sale on for eg. Carlton Audio Visual & some other shops in AU, they have a capital V in van, so I think this is not a way to tell.

I did a google and could not see anyone really mentioning this to tell the fakes.

I thought it was on their own website way back but can't see it anymore.

I have had these cables before and those look like the real deal.

The screen printing on the plugs is too well done to be fakes which I think sometimes the fakes will have a sticker wrapped around instead.
