Hi - I recently purchased an LG BP60NB10 which had been modified to allow 4K ripping.  Along the way, it's given me plenty of errors on what seemed like immaculate discs (only ever watched once, handled with care, etc.).  Is there a drive which is better at reading these discs?  I have around 15 discs that I really want to rip (some 4K some regular bluray).  Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Sean

Use a PC with a bluray burner, or buy an external bluray burner.

The external bluray burners are only about $50.

Last time I had issues with bluray rips I switched to a Pioneer drive which solved many of the problems.  That was a couple of years back  but Pioneer  has always made top notch optical drives.

Check that the drive is correctly powered? Can it play a movie?  It is using older PC technology and not all USB adaptors work. Am using this

And I assume you are using MakeMKV?  Have you tried getting help on that forum? There are combinations of drive models and firmware that the forum recommends but I am not across the details.

At the end of the day, there is a risk that such drives will not work.  I did a little bit of reading on the forum prior but was not totally confident that things will work. As such, I was prepared to write things off, but was lucky with an LG BH16NS55 with the correct firmware.

Have no experience with your LG drive.

Same here, got that unit from MartyMcNuts (MakeMKV Forum) fully firmware updated and has been working without issues for a few years now.

I've found a similar problem when trying to rip Disney Blu-Ray to put on our NAS to use via Plex. Full of errors, and mostly stop at about 45% which makes me think they intentionally put errors on the disc to prevent easy ripping.

If you do find a solution I'm keen to know about it. That said, picture quality via our Blu-Ray player is certainly better than Plex anyway but its still inconvenient.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  I might give the LG BH16NS55 a go, so if anyone would like to borrow my LG BP60NB10 and let me know how they get on with it, they are very welcome.

Does that rip Disney discs alright? If so I may need to source one.

Sorry, I don't have any Disney movies to try.  Which drive are you using to rip?  You're welcome to try mine.

Sorry, have not done my only 4K Disney movie, Toy Story 4, but it is on loan at the moment.  😢   However, I have had zero issues with my 4K rips so far and do not anticipate issues.  Suggest you contact MartyMcNuts to confirm this before buying.

Suggest getting a Zidoo, Dune or Zappiti HD player. I have used Zidoo and Dune.  The video quality is excellent, just slightly below my bechmark Pana DP-UB9000.  The user interface is good and Plex is not necessary, but I have read that some people have loaded Plex.
