audiboi Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Hello there! I'm in the market for some floor-standers to pair up with my Pioneer SX-727. This will only be used with my turntable. I've been looking through ebay / gumtree and came across this -> http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/randwick/audio/jamo-cl30-speakers/1024075096 I've read a few reviews about these speakers (including one here on stereo.net.au) and it's been pretty positive so far. My question is about something that's in the description of the ad... "some bubbling to one lower laminate shell". Is this something cosmetic only or should I be worried about it? Alternatively if someone could point me to some decent second hand floor standers (<$500), I'd be much obliged. Thanks!

What amp are you going to use with it? What type of music do you listen to? Size of room? Do they need to be floor standing? Lots of options just no point suggesting a pair of floor standing running 84db sensitivity at 2ohm if you have a 20w class A amp Edited August 2, 2013 by hyper
henry218 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 from the photos, the midranges foam surround is gone, you will need to replace the driver or the foam surround, which in this type of speakers prob better not to. cheers henry

I'd prefer floor standing, but I could settle for decent bookshelf pair as well.
Guest Hensa Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 These would be well worth a look and listen.. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JM-Lab-Focal-Chorus-714s-Speakers-Made-in-France-/261252867880?pt=AU_Hi_Fi_Speakers&hash=item3cd3e26728&_uhb=1
hyper Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 (edited) Ok If your room is normal size than the pioneer at 40-50wpc should drive the Usher s520 and work a charm best bang for buck speaker around I think most would agree well under your budget at 329 on eBay. Second hand floor standing I would look at something like the Sonique 5.5 or krix speakers can't go wrong for the price, going vintage you should also look at JBL can find some nice t series for under 500 Edited August 2, 2013 by hyper
oceangreen17 Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 I agree with Hensa that examples like the JM Focal he has recommended above would be a good, safe buy - (The Focals are 91 db sensitivity into 8 omhs) Also other European brands like Dynaudio made good slim design entry level floorstanders (Audience series of a few years back) Another idea is look around for some Australian made second hand speakers - I used to have a pair of Krix MDX standmounts a few years back which were around $500 and sounded surprisingly good. Very pleasant and musical speakers. In fact there are far too many choices out there. Call me old fashioned there are great examples on this site right now!
audiboi Posted August 4, 2013 Author Posted August 4, 2013 Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm keeping an eye out for something that I could pick up second hand... I'll update once I've grabbed something.

audiboi Posted August 27, 2013 Author Posted August 27, 2013 Update: So I managed to get my hands on a vintage pair of floor-standers, but I have no idea what model they are. They sound pretty sweet hooked up to my Pioneer SX-727. I've attached some pics: Can someone help identify the model? Cheers!
