Andre28 Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 What is your preferred way to tame some treble? Do you pair with a "warmer" amp, or EQ them? I assume not worth looking in to different cables in this regard?
Bengineer Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Most solid state amps now technically measure pretty much flat. So whilst some sound softer or sharper or warmer or brighter, they are mostly pretty close. You can try a tube amp if you don't want to EQ, depending on exact model / type it can help there.. Else EQ or a different set of cans. Also try pinpoint what is actually annoying you. Might not be treble, might be more the mids/upper mids that you find fatiguing. 2
MrBurns84 Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 EQ'ing is probably the lesser evil imo. Changes to sources, dacs, amps, cables etc usually takes or add's some form of colouration to the end sound. 1

Andre28 Posted July 19, 2022 Author Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Ended up the Edition XS as ill admit to being talked out of the LCD2C, though im thinking I should have just went with those, or perhaps stretched to the LCD-X. I am not sure what is fatiguing me, be it treble or upper mids. I will need to find out how to go about pinpointing it. I suppose I should learn how to EQ as well. Edited July 19, 2022 by Andre28 1

Bengineer Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 For my own ears, I'd be knocking that 2500-5000 region down and maybe nail the 11,000-12,000 spike a bit. 1 1
eLicky Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Depends what's causing the harshness, in some cases for me digital glare has caused it coming from the PC, for that you can try the free version of fidelizer to achieve a more natural sound. Other times its been the DAC like 2 separate RME-ADI2 I used, I could only use EQ so much before it effected the sound signature of the headphone. And lastly its been the headphone like the first original HD800 I owned, couldn't solve it and sold it to someone who loves them. Now I own a second pair of HD800 that sound different with great treble. This is the audio world we live in. 1
Andre28 Posted July 19, 2022 Author Posted July 19, 2022 Thanks all. Do we already have a EQ for dummies guide kicking around the place? Or anywhere you recommend? Is it generally paid software or are there free versions about?
Andre28 Posted July 19, 2022 Author Posted July 19, 2022 Windows yes, either spotify, or I have a bunch of FLACs that I play through foobar with wasapi.
Andre28 Posted July 19, 2022 Author Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Foobar has a basic inbuilt equaliser that I play around with sometimes, but I dont really know what I am doing. It looks like this: Edited July 19, 2022 by Andre28
Bengineer Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 Download and install Equaliser APO. Download and install PEACE GUI. Open Configurator, enable Peace. Also enable your DAC. Restart. Then I can help you tweak some stuff
Bengineer Posted July 19, 2022 Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Drag the 3.5 and the 10 sliders down 3-4db and do a session. See what happens. In foobar, since its there Edited July 19, 2022 by Bengineer 1
Andre28 Posted July 23, 2022 Author Posted July 23, 2022 OK ive got equaliser and peace, and only my dac for the headphones has been selected. Sure is a lot more options here then the foobar equaliser! Is there like a set file that can be downloaded specific to the headphones that loads all the settings, or is it all manual?
Andre28 Posted July 23, 2022 Author Posted July 23, 2022 Do I need to have Peace open for the settings to be in effect? Or is it set once and forget it? Also I was just mucking around with the sliders and they werent doing anything, do i need to "set" them or something? Sorry for all the questions!
Bengineer Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 Turn it on, top right. Then drag the preamp value down, if it doesn't get quieter, its not working yet. Just be a output device setting thing

This is fine though, the little adjustments on foobar helped a little.
Bengineer Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 You'll have to fiddle with settings. Sometimes you have your DAC set to not allow programs exclusive control over etc, or one of the programs like Foobar too. Once you get that preamp slider actually changing volume (happens instantly) you'll know its working and can start tweaking. 1
Nada Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 Google WASAPI Foobar MathAudio EQ. Needs a manual set up but well worth it. Trying to get the best from headphones or speakers without EQ is masochistic. 1

Andre28 Posted July 23, 2022 Author Posted July 23, 2022 Yes looks like Ill use foobar eq for my flacs and peace for spotify. Ultimately though I'll either just get use to these or buy something less bright.

Your issue with your headphone is usually a peak in the mid sensitive zone 2-4kHz. EQ it right and it will be like a different headphone. You can route Spotify or even better Qobuz into Foobar with apps. Expect it to sound better.
