so i have been wanting to build a new hifi cabinet for my gear and after a couple of years of procrastinating i have finally started the build the shelves are separated by 70mm x 70mm pine posts each of which have a 16mm hole through the center to allow for a 12mm threaded rod to pass through them to clamp everything together and give it incredible strength, the feet will be recessed to hide the nut and washer and so that you can't see the nut and washer at the top the same will be done to the top caps the "legs" are set in 10mm from the edges to give the appearance of the legs going through the shelves. I still have to stain the shelves and recess the feet and caps and put some edging on the ply to hide the fact it is plywood. anyway here are some pictures i will post some more when it is finished the middle picture shows the size of the feet(obviously these go on the bottom)

Dimensions are 1800mm x 500mm shelve heights are 250mm, 120mm and 100mm each bay is 500mm wide this will allow plenty of air to circulate.

My wife just through me a curve ball she reckons it would look really good if the shelves are stained but the legs where painted black, its actually a really good idea i just wish she had thought of it sooner!

I'm sure if you were in a major city you could sell the proto.

It's a beauty!

i have plans of making them available for sale in the not to distant future, they can be custom made to order, price would include courier fees and could even be shipped as a flat pack because of the way i have designed it

some updates, shelves have been stained on one side(bottom) will do other sides tomorrow have come up with an idea for the edges, i will cut thin strips of pine(3-4mm) stain them and then apply that to the edges using glue and tape to hold them in place until glue dries(see pictures for example)

Maple edging cut and stained, it was fun cutting these i made a jig that made it pretty easy to cut the 2mm thick edges and i was able to get more than enough from 2x 30mmX 12mm x 2.4m maple strips

Might I suggest glueing the edging on before you sand and stain next time. And use polyeurthane glue which  is easy to sand off.

when i started i was not sure if i was even going to bother doing the edges so it was one of those after thoughts, but most definitely i would glue the edges before staining. I would also not use a stain and varnish combo this can be very difficult when it comes to painted "hard edges" as it becomes very dark and is very difficult to remove once it dries, stain first then varnish!. I would also use proper veneer edging i just did not want to wait nearly 2 weeks to get it! I would also not use one of those foam sanding blocks to sand edges of plywood as that tends to "roll" the edge making the edging joint not so hidden, but i don't mind how it looks as it kind of makes it a feature.
