After much frustration with frequent dropouts occurring on my main system while streaming in Airplay mode via the Bluesound NODE and SONOS ONE speakers (all on the same network with the NODE hardwired to ethernet) I finally found a solution that works. Unfortunately, the fix involves a Mac Mini and therefore may not be a universal fix for all.

Basically, when selecting the Airplay devices to group together using whichever streaming service app you wish to play on multiple zones of speakers, select the Mac Mini FIRST, followed by the SONOS speakers, then LASTLY select the Bluesound NODE as part of the group. It's important to see that the order of the grouping puts the Mac Mini first followed by the SONOS then the NODE. Sometimes the order displayed for the group doesn't follow the order of selections. (frustrating) For some reason, by including the Mac Mini first in the group of Airplay devices makes the difference of avoiding dropouts coming out of the Bluesound NODE.

If I select only the Bluesound Node and SONOS One speakers into an Airplay group (leaving out the Mac Mini), I get very frequent and annoying dropouts from the main speakers in my system. The real mystery and kicker is that I'm not using the Mac Mini to output anything! But the Mac Mini is connected to my Topping DX7 PRO DAC via USB which the NODE is also connected to. Apparently Airplay just works better when it sees another Apple device in the group. More Apple conspiracy fodder, but at least it works!

Good to have solutions!  Airplay used to be super reliable, but I get drop outs and half second pauses all the time now.  All the updates Apple do sometimes bring in other bugs…. 🙄
