oceangreen17 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Is it OK to leave a Gainclone power amp on all the time? I notice mine sounds better after extended listening sessions. On the same theme, I have the original Eastern Electric Tube DAC with op-amp mods (the one before the plus). As I do not use the tube output is it OK to remove the tube, and leave the DAC on continuously? Thanks Steve
ArthurDent Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 The only problem with leaving power amps on all the time is if something goes askew and you're not there to turn it off before it damages your speakers or sets fire to itself or breaks something else. Pre-amps and sources on all the time, not a problem, power amps, a tad iffy and not something I would do. If the DAC runs okay with the tube(s) out then it should be fine to leave on. 1

A J Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 My 2c worth - I do leave my gear on all the time as I am comfortable that nothing will go catastrophically wrong - if it did with a power amp I'm not sure human reaction would be quick enough to save the speakers in any case. The gear that I have owned or built has always sounded better after a warm-up so I've just left it on - its easier also on the components and PCB as you don't get as many thermal cycles. Your question for a chip amp - yep I would leave it on - they draw little power at rest and are unlikely to fail when your not driving them hard. AJ
