I’ve rebuilt a few sets of speakers now, including several sets of Missions.
I rewired my 753s with Straightwire cable which helped things significantly.

I use Mundorf caps in my rebuilds but refuse to judge projects too harshly when first put back together. Mundorf caps benefit from many hours of running in after which they free up and open out very nicely.

Ive also chatted to Mission (Peter Comeau himself) and yes, detail on previous models, even early IAG products, is very light. Mission are known for having various versions of many speakers and even making changes to products mid-run with no model change or new designation.

The Freedom with soft dome likely had some minor changes to the crossover too. As minor as a resistor value is likely and even changes to enclosure volumes or bracing.

Unless you have old next to new and pull each apart though, it’s all kind of a big guess.

Further changes to the 753F Azumi Series. I have now changed out the film cap and resistor on the tweeter circuit. The resister is now 1 ohm Mills instead of the 3.3 ohm and the cap is a Vishay MKT 1822, same 6.8uf value. The tweeter is now a little more prominent and overall more pleasant to listen to. The old components will be stored.

This is my first post as a member here.

I picked up a set up Mission 753 speakers (in Black) a few years ago. Already had the 753F Azumi Signature series (in another post) so I was keen to see what the differences were. I was amazed at the difference in the sound between the two models. The 753 was very bright with less controlled bass but still nicer to listen to than the 753F at the time.

So, after upgrading the 753F with Mundorf caps I ordered the parts for the 753... After several weeks delay I was told the last parts on order would be months away so I down graded the 10uf caps and got them a few weeks later. In the mean time I picked up a set of Bose 901s 5th gen to repair from a friend...

So, I finally got the impetus to attack the 753 again last week end. But first I decided to update the 753F tweeter section with a Vishay and Mills resistor. I was impressed by the changes. A few hours later I had the 753s updated. Everything nice and glued down only to realise that the setup was too wide for the hole in the speaker cabinet. A bit of rearranging and some careful juggling the crossover were back in place. The difference was noticeable. The speakers are a bit clearer and very pleasant to listen to. The 753F also now have a clearer treble and I'll be happy yo keep them for a while yet.

The 2 1000uf caps, in series, in the bass were replaced with 270uf + 220uf in parallel. The 2 470uf series caps were replaced with Mundorf ECap 470uf in series. The 6.8uf cap in the tweeter was replaced with Vishay MKT 1822, same as now in the 753F.

Great posts and yes, Mission speakers respond well to crossover mods.

Have a sift through my thread. Bit of a Mission fan myself and have modded many sets now.

Thanks Gemini07,

The rest of the system consists of a Yamaha Aventage RX-A2020 as a pre amp. A couple of speaker switch boxes that allow me to switch to any or all of the speakers. A McIntosh MC7100 for the power amp.

Speakers include:

AR9, AR9 LSi, AR94, AR TSW 910, Mission 753, Mission 753F, Yamaha ns777, Yamaha NS 1000, B&W 703 S1 and a couple of SubSonic ML2 subs.

Cheers.

I recently took the plunge and bought a pair of the new Mission 770's, via Living Entertainment North Coast. I thought I'd share some views on results to date.

Firstly, thanks to Nat at LE NC for his ongoing advice and help in getting me a pair - excellent service under difficult circumstances.

Despite currently owning two pairs of the original 770's, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the latest iteration, especially as my own examples are slightly different in tone and presentation. I was unable to travel interstate to audition a pair and was entirely dependent on a variety of (very positive) video reviews. I should add that I was also considering a few other contenders in the same price range, although again it was hard to audition them.

I've only had the new 770's in place for a few days but my initial impressions are very positive. I thought the original 770 's were very neutral, detailed, natural and presented voices exactly as they were, remembering of course that digital music was not commercially available to the public in 1978 - it was all vinyl. I disagree with some recent reviewers who have described those speakers as warm. They are not - the music they played via vinyl was warm but the speakers themselves are completely neutral IMO.

These new 770's, however, are also very detailed and natural but with a slightly fuller and deeper presentation, adding a suggestion of warmth to their character, although this could also be due to the Accuphase power amp I'm using. Bass in particular is definitely not lacking and adds real substance to the weight and tone of the sound.

Overall, the 770 's soundstage is both deeper and wider than their predecessors. The tonal spectrum is wonderfully balanced and even, with nothing in excess or dominant. As nearly every reviewer stated, you can listen to these for hours and not feel anything is out of place. Nothing really leaps out at you as being remarkable, but everything is just right, with a large variety of music.

I'm happy to answer queries via PM and will provide pics after I've finished fiddling around with room placement. Local members are welcome to come over for a listen if interested.
