VinylChef Posted October 20, 2022 Posted October 20, 2022 These 'pregnant penguin' speakers from B&W are iconic not just for their unmistakable looks, but for their incredible sound. These cost USD$1190 in 1977, which is the equivalent today of around AUD$9,100. Extremely high quality components and build, as evidenced by the beautiful crossover, 26kg cabinet and heavy, well constructed drivers (B&W were the first to use woven kevlar in their midrange driver). The 10" bass driver is bextrene with original rubber surround, which should virtually never need replacing. They have awesome power (they can soak up 350W without blinking) and finesse; just outstanding, breathtakingly gorgeous sound. I have recapped only out-of-spec electrolytic capacitors (mirrored on both crossovers. The switches have been lubed, fuses replaced, veneer restored. Unfortunately the previous owner discarded the foam under the tweeter on one speaker and both lower grills. I am including the upper grills in the sale, but I think they look best without them. With all grills and foam I'd price these at around $2000, so you get fabulous, incredible DM6 sound for this bargain basement price! Frequency Response: 50Hz - 20kHz Crossover Frequency: 500Hz, 5,000Hz Sensitivity: 95dB at 1 metre Impedance: 8ohms Power Handling: 25 W – 350 W Dimensions: 93cm (H) x 41cm(W) x 38cm(D) Weight: 36kg Audition and pickup Edgecliff. 1 2

Stuey63 Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 I can still remember my mate's father, a serious music buff, had these back in the 80's. I have no idea what the amp was, but the source was a serious looking reel to reel and they sounded like something out of this world...
raoulrecords Posted October 22, 2022 Posted October 22, 2022 To the person who said 'fugly' - I think these things look cool AF. Be interested to hear how you'd compare their sound to the Gales.
