Hi all,

I've started my journey into audio coming previously from a yamaha 6.1 setup that cost me $80 with an old yamaha receiver. For about a year I've been using a Jamo S506 setup (503 surround, 500 series center + sub) with a Marantz SR5010 receiver.

I recently picked up a S418 series 5.1 setup for very cheap which I was going to test or give to a family member who has no speakers.

Looking at the specs the S418 has 2x8" woofers and a 1" tweeter.

The S506 has 2x6.5" woofers and a 1" tweeter.

I'm using it mainly for movies/TV and gaming, not really for music. I found that the S418s had better bass than the S506s and there was better clarity. In a scene where people are underground you could hear the reverberation more and the clinking of cutlery in the kitchen was also clearer. The mids were quite dull though, which was especially noticeable in dialogue. It made female voices sound not as sharp/drowned out. It sucks because the S418 is punchier and clearer otherwise.

I have a couple of questions:

  • Would having a more powerful amp boost the mid-range of the S418? Or is this just the design? Or could it be that they are damaged (they look okay externally)?
  • It's hard to find information on the internet about nomenclature but which is supposed to be the higher spec speaker? The S418 ends in 8 and has 2 x 8" woofers but the S506 has the option for bi-wiring.
  • These speakers are circa 2012 - how much better would newer speakers be of a similar tier?

As you can tell I'm a complete newbie and have no idea but appreciate any responses!

Cheers
