thejt Posted December 3, 2022 Posted December 3, 2022 When we started having the kids the stereo was relegated from the lofted living room to a small unused bedroom. By coincidence I also discovered the phenomenon of inappropriate large JBL in small rooms thanks to a thread here on stereonet. I had started to move to larger speakers gradually after bookshelves for many years. After trying ns1000m with a 12" woofer the smaller speakers weren't doing it for me. I picked up a set of 15" coral woofers here on SNA and also compression drivers. By pure luck secured old Altec cabs at a local auction. With the kids still took more than a year to get things functional. So far I'm enjoying it but long way to go still. I'm currently using an old crown active for the crossover with a bakoon on the mids and a spec amp (power mode) on the bass. 10 3
2Brix Posted December 3, 2022 Posted December 3, 2022 very noice, although i can't see anything inappropriate at all 3 1
crtexcnndrm99 Posted December 3, 2022 Posted December 3, 2022 Very nice, and high quality amplification as well. Hard to go back from the way that a drum solo sounds on 15” woofers… Are the cabs rear ported or sealed? I’m in the same camp with oversized JBL franken-speakers, currently with Bakoon for all three drivers and Lenco front end. Curious if you’ve had a chance yet to listen to biamped vs the Bakoon only? For the crossover, there are some Accuphase F5/15’s floating around other classifieds which may offer an upgrade there.

I've not had a passive yet so been unable to try the bakoon on its own with these. The boxes are sealed, the originals were front ported but I installed a new baffle over them. 2
Rrobot Posted December 4, 2022 Posted December 4, 2022 (edited) So great to see it all come together @thejt And I agree with the earlier comments... completely appropriate size! Edited December 4, 2022 by Rrobot 2

Much assistance from others on the board and every horn person I've met. Very open to sharing their experiences. 1
thejt Posted December 13, 2022 Author Posted December 13, 2022 Massive upgrade on the horns. Much thanks to Martin from Azura horn. Generous with time and knowledge. Now crossing lower at 700Hz 7 3
Guest Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Love it. Which compressions drivers are you using with the Azuras?

Grizaudio Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 (edited) Once you go big, there's no going back. I don't follow the idea that small rooms should have small speakers. In my experience large speakers in small rooms sound excellent. I personally run 15's/compression in my bedroom office. Love the horns. How are you correcting response? lowpoke Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Nothing inappropriate about the size of those babies.

thejt Posted June 28, 2023 Author Posted June 28, 2023 I've done some Marie Kondo and the rooms a bit neater. I've recently received and have been running in passive crossovers by Werner Jagusch. Initial impressions were a drop in resolution but adjustment to the attenuation and some run time removed that concern. As the passive is a three way instead of my two way active a little pair of fostex super tweets are now installed. The passive also allowed me to bring tubes back into the fray and Clifford's pre and power amps are back in action. In my clean out I've simplified things quite alot. Separate streamer and phono has been replaced with a NAD C658 which also brings with it Dirac. Wow! Never would have believed the difference it makes. There's a level of coherency I didn't realise was missing. Snuck in a new record player too 7 4 1

thejt Posted January 20, 2024 Author Posted January 20, 2024 Lots of new things and lots of help from helpful people on this forum! Was unable to resist the Goldring recently for sale and an very happy to have an idler running again. Terrific chance to finally have the team at Frank Prowse install the SPU they organised. Beautiful sound right out of the box. Refined, big and bold. Picked up last year on the forum was also this beaut Line Magnetic. Finding transmission tubes bring a wonderful sense of cohesion and makes a nice alternative to the 300b. Both living on the Sony Trinitron TV cabinet I had from the early 90s! 5 2
Flash Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 Loving this! I’ve decided my speakers are way too small. 2

Flash Posted January 21, 2024 Posted January 21, 2024 That just means I can go bigger. I’m sure I could squeeze in Paul McGowan’s old IRS-Vs somehow. It may require a chainsaw, but I’m sure it’s doable. 1

andyr Posted January 21, 2024 Posted January 21, 2024 Here are some that a mate of mine in Tassie, is building: Pretty 'outrageous' - I sure would lurve to hear them!
Flash Posted January 21, 2024 Posted January 21, 2024 I don’t believe you, @andyr. I’m in Tassie, and he doesn’t look familiar at all… 1 2
