I have come across these Marantz units for sale online and I want to start negotiating with him.

The seller is offering $900 for the lot.

The units included in the sale are:

- st300 tuner

- pm400 amplifier

- eq20 equaliser

- sd1000 tape player (not working)

Is this a good price for the lot or would I be overpaying?

Thanks in advance.

Does it all work and do they sound good to you? If so buy, if not move on. As for the price haggle and if the owner let’s go for less it’s a win, if not that’s the price you pay.

A bit on the high side I think, I would think more like $600 if all working without issues, except the tape player which is already identified as faulty. And that's being generous!

Also consider these are 40 odd years old so would be in need of restoration.

Just my view.

You would be better getting an amp like this

Connect a CD Player like this

If you have speakers already that's a system.

Yeah, even allowing for the "Marantz tax" (reflecting the brand's desirability in the vintage market) I'd be looking at $600 or less, assuming the amp and tuner are working well.

I made an offer around $600. He said he'd keep them for that price. Oh well it's his loss. He clearly has unrealistic expectations.

$600 is very generous of you and I am surprised the seller refused the offer. IMO this stack is one for the hard rubbish kerbside collection.

I think you are pretty close.

It is OK for a low end system and/or if you are a Marantz fanatic and collector, otherwise there is definitely better to be had ;)

He helped you with that rejection, you can do better :thumb:

Yeah you dodged a bullet there.

Tuners and graphic equalisers are worth pretty much nothing these days. The cassette deck doesn't work, so all you're left with is an amp. For $900. Tell him he's dreaming.

Yeah absolutely. It seems like he just wants to keep the gear which is fine with me haha.

I have a decent system already so anything else I buy now would end up in one of my spare rooms. So there isn't a dire need to get any new gear.

You have spare rooms?   Wow my mind boggles at the thought. My bedroom contains a Makita compound sliding saw a key cutting machine, approx 500 padlocks and assorted parts, amps tuners dacs, 5 or so Tecsun radios, vintage National Panasonic radios, 6 acoustic guitars and 4 sets of bookshelf speakers.. Of course I live on my own! Must work out how to sell stuff.😑

Sounds like you need a reel to reel since you aren't obsessed with hi-fi enough 😜
