s.white Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Hello Folks I've just bought a mint condition pair of Rogers Studio 5 speakers in rose wood veneer , does anyone have any information on them as they look different to all the pictures I can find of the same model . Regards Steve
RCAJack Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Hi Steve. Would you be able to post a pic of your speakers? Being of a certain age it’s possible they have non-factory drivers fitted if the originals failed at some point. Maybe even replacement cones for the mid-bass driver which lack the semi-transparent polypropylene of the originals. That would be an explanation if they don’t look like what you see online. How do they sound?
s.white Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 t These have never been used, so drivers would not need to have been changed ? 2
s.white Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 They sound good I run some B&W 603 S2s and they sound as good if not better than them. 1
RCAJack Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 Thanks Steve. Definitely different to what I remembered. This old ad for some Studio 5s has various photos showing the mid bass driver cone material as semi-transparent polypropylene: https://www.ukaudiomart.com/details/649351775-rogers-studio-5-vintage-speakers-hifi-rare-hi-low-input-matched-pair-6-ohms/images/1528923/ There’s also a slight difference in the tweeters, and obviously the baffle is finished in black whereas yours are timber, but that might have been an optional finish. So it could be a change in production that wasn’t well documented (i think Rogers had some management/ownership issues back then) or it’s got to be possible yours have been modified somewhere along the way
s.white Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 Thank you Jack , that's interesting, might take the speakers out to see what drivers they are 1
parrasaw Posted December 23, 2022 Posted December 23, 2022 If you Google: "Rogers speaker repair" (or similar), you will find that Rogers announced on 13 July 2020 a "New restoration and upgrade service for older Rogers Products". They may (or may not) still be offering the service, but will likely be able to assist you with any of your questions (after the Xmas holiday period). The rosewood veneer finish looks terrific. Let us know what you find, if you open the speakers up, to see what drivers are in there. Once you know what's in there, getting on to Rogers (as per their 2020 offer) will probably answer all of your remaining questions. Willys Hifi seem to offer all sorts of drivers for the Rogers speakers, but if it was me, I would go first to Rogers themselves 2
s.white Posted December 23, 2022 Author Posted December 23, 2022 thank you Parrasaw I will take a look
Stuey63 Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 (edited) Hi Steve, I can't see clearly, but it does look like the woofers could be non-original as it appears you can see where the original's screw holes were/are (like all the other's I've seen) an eighth of a turn from the screw holes on the current woofers (of course, I could be wrong as I'm looking at a photo!). Yours look a bit like the woofers on the Rogers LS3/5A actually. It seems bizarre because as you say they look like they haven't been used. Beautiful finish on them! Have had the Roger up and running and they do sound as good as they look . Just hooked up an early 60th birthday present from my partner she got me a musical fidelity m6s pre and it sounds sublime with the nad c298 and the rogers . Am blown away that she knew exactly what Amp to get . Am one happy bunny 1
s.white Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 These are the drivers and crossover inside the studio 5's I am going to replace the woofer with a pair of Markaudio CHN-110 - Single Full range Speaker Drivers I will still use the crossover as although it is roughly 30 years old I am the first person to hook these speakers up from new and everything on them is in mint condition
Stuey63 Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 I see the tweeter is a Vifa model used in loads of speakers; does the woofer have other markings (such as by Vifa, Peerless, Audax or Kef)? It isn't the B110 used in the LS3/5a as the basket frame is not round on the B110. Are there other holes drilled around the woofer hole in the cabinet? If the speaker sounds good now, I wouldn't change out the woofer (except maybe as an experiment, for fun) as, unless you are incredibly lucky, the crossover will not work well with a totally new woofer. Crossover design is a very complicated art and the crossover is designed with that woofer's parameters in mind. I have taken a couple of years to dial in a crossover on one of my DIY two ways!
s.white Posted January 9, 2023 Author Posted January 9, 2023 Hello Stuey There are some threaded mounts around the speaker hole that were most likely put there for a different speaker the current speaker is screwed in and has been offset from the threaded holes
s.white Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 Hello Stuey. I have attached a couple of pictures of my finished mods to the rogers speakers 1
Stuey63 Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Excellent! I'm surprised they're better with the stock crossover and such different drivers, but well done. The proof is in the listening.
s.white Posted February 10, 2023 Author Posted February 10, 2023 Ot was a bit of a long shot , but has paid off wonderfully. The new drivers have been a revelation. Got a good deal £140 for all 4
