Sansui77 Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 Hi All, Happy new year to all.  Just wondering what pressings on vinyl of Pink Floyd's - Dark side of the moon are the best sounding as I've read that most are noisy. I have the first Australian pressing but it's getting a bit tired and need a better copy.  Â
2Brix Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 @Sansui77 Apparently this one is pretty good, and it's on special right now  5
2Brix Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 More seriously, i'll spin garden variety Made in the E.U. in an hour or so and will report back 1
awayward Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 I have a 2003 30th Anniversary edition, I’m not exactly sure which version it is as there are a few, just played it now and it sounds excellent. 1

vivianbl Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 Have two copies of The Wall and they are noisy, even after two goes on the RCM. Even the CD is noisy, especially the early part. I have an early copy of Dark Side of the Moon, haven’t heard it for a while, but wasn’t aware of surface noises. I put it on the RCM a couple of weeks ago. Will have a listen this evening and report back.  2

Wimbo Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 I've got the Aussie OG A Jap and a MFSL that are all fine. The MFSL's Jacket ain't that great. Of the three, to me, the Aussie sounds the best. Haven't played them for a while though. 3
2Brix Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 (edited) S'ok @Sansui77  Mine is the 2016 Reissue, made in the EU. Pink Floyd Records PFRLP8 (5099902987613).  I purchased new for $50 around 2 years ago, have played sparingly but shamefully never yet cleaned (puts in the to clean stack now ).   Played right through just now using Denon DL103R MC cart and listening via speakers.  Side A has low level surface noise and occasional crackle mostly at Songs 1 and 2 but occasionally for the remainder of the side. No aggressive pops.  Side B is noticeably better with very little surface noise, almost none. Did notice a little at the final track outro to lead out grooves.  It still appears to be readily available new at $45-50 plus shipping, and should i think clean up nicely.  So at that price, recommended as a regularly playing copy.  Ever at your service 2B Edited December 30, 2022 by 2Brix 2 1
Tasebass Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 Second Brit pressing here I bought New in '84....SHVL 804... surface noise is OK so is the SQ... Discogs says a low of A$16 high of A$188... Tase. 1
gat474 Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 Google PFRLP8, it’s a 2016 pressing. I bought a copy at JB’s this year. It’s a very good pressing, quiet and sounds great. Much better than my audiophile pressing. Not too pricey either. 2 1
Sansui77 Posted December 30, 2022 Author Posted December 30, 2022 (edited) Just got the 2016 release sealed for $39.99 with free shipping. I'm sure there could be the 50th anniversary release coming out maybe next year. Â Â Â Â Â Edited December 30, 2022 by Sansui77 2

This is a white colour disc. 1973 Harvest, manufactured in Bovema Holland. 5C 062- 05249.  First time I’ve listened to it since the  set up of my listening room! Great music. Really enjoyed it. Very different to when I heard it on previous systems.  Unfortunately , plenty of annoying record surface noise - pops crackle and tick, some quite loud-  on the lead into the first track and the first track. After that quiet as. Side 2 also quiet as.  5
Be Quiet...Listen Posted December 30, 2022 Posted December 30, 2022 I have 8 copies.  English A3/B2. MFSL. 1st Jap. Pro Series Jap. 1st German. 1st Australian (which in actual fact is a Quad pressing). 2nd US Early 80's US (different mastering and preferred by some).  All of them impart their own virtues. Â

I have a original Australian pressing (stereo) and 2016 remastered version coming so I will be able to compare.Â
mkaramazov Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 I have the 1988 Australian Quad copy, pressed on pink vinyl, and the 30th Anniversary Press.  The 30th Anniversary is a fantastic piece of vinyl. To my ears, it is different, and in some ways better, than the SACD from the same generation remaster. 2
Tim D Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 Reading this piqued my interest in DSOTM so after a coffee I dropped by Dutch Vinyl in Paddington, Brisbane. Â To my surprise they had a 2nd hand MOFI version sitting on the rack. Â Had to grab it, brought it home and it plays with very little noise. Â Will give it a run through the RCM tomorrow. 2
Geoff Millar Posted December 31, 2022 Posted December 31, 2022 (edited) I also had the SQ Quadrophonic LP, long unavailable for purchase. It sounded a little cleaner than my original Oz LP pressing, the main difference being a quieter surface. The music sounded pretty much the same, although in those days my system wasn't the 'hi-est fi'.  The posters were the same as the originals which (of course) decorated the back of my bedroom door for many years.  To my ears, the most recent CD release - the one with the oft-bootlegged in concert version of the album - is the pick.  Geoff Edited December 31, 2022 by Geoff Millar 1
Darryl Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 I scored a bunch of records today (and some 78s), one of which is the SQ Quad pressing. QHVL 804 A-2 in the deadwax. It even has the original posters which is pretty cool!. I'm having a big cleaning session over the next few days before I start playing anything. Looking forward to it. 1
Sansui77 Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 I just ordered their live LP coming out at the end of April. Â Â Â 1
Tim D Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 The live one at the Knebworth came out a couple years ago. Â The live Darkside remaster comes out this March 1
