I'm interested in members go to albums of all time on Vinyl.

It could be the album is just a kick a#s from when it was first released to the best version pressing.

List them.....

Cranberries "everybody else is doing it so why cant we" sounds truly sublime. Was a very limited release.

Propellerheads "Decksanddrumsandrockandroll" is a cracker too.  I think it was reissued.

I've always loved Paul Simon's "Graceland", but most of his back catalog on vinyl was very well recorded.

Peter Gabriel "Passion" is marvellous.

I have the single sided clear vinyl DMM of Joe Satriani "Always with me, always with you" which I have yet to hear a better version of.

As far as "best versions of" are concerned, across any format (and I've tried high res digital, SACD, Sony Legacy super bit map CD, regular CD, regular LP, 180g reissue, original stereo 6 eye, original mono 6 eye), thus far the original mono 6 eye copy of Brubeck Time Out utterly stomps on the sound quality of ANY other version.  By light years.  If you can give up the stereo mix, then the original six eye Columbia mono is the utter bomb. The tone is to die for. Those folks cutting the monos for Columbia were on to something.  I've got the mono six eye of Billie Holliday "Lady in Satin" and Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain" which sound lovely too.  I'd love to have one of Kind of Blue, but they are now over 1k if you can find them.

These are my go to pressings.  In no order.

Ray Brown and L. Almeida  -  Moonlight Serenade.  Jeton 2003.   The depth of bass blows you away.  It's the album that convinced me to buy my speakers when Keith played it - was a demo album for some time. Thanks @cheekyboy

Ray Brown Trio  -  Soular Energy.  Pure Audiophile Records 2002.  It comes with a warning on the front about dynamics of the bass....

Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Mosiac.  Music Matters 45rpm 2013.  If you want to hear how drums are meant to sound, halfway through the title track - wow..

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Keystone 3.  Pure Audiophile Records 2005.  Amazing SQ, especially for a live set.  It was his last recorded music before passing (IIRC).  Just fantastic, as is most from this label.

Tool - Fear Inoculum 5 LP boxset 2022.  Absolutely flawless SQ and music (IMO)

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly. Mobile Fidelity One Step 2017.  Considered the best sounding Mofi One Step (which we now know is at least a two step process...  but let's not derail this thread). Stunning sound regardless.  Thanks @evil c

Mala - Mala in Cuba 4lp release. Brownswood Recordings 2013. Stunning SQ and music   Thanks @klackto

Rokia Traore - Tchamantche Decca Records France 2021. Stunning SQ and music

Meshell Ndegeocello - Bitter.  Run Out Groove 2022. Stunning SQ and music.

Reema - The LowSwing Sessions. LowSwing Records 2021.  Indie Label in Germany which produces high end Audiophile vinyl.  Female singer, ballad-oriented set which sounds amazing.  Any Release from this label is excellent.  Port Almond - little Ships is also very well done.  There are several ppl on here who follow LowSwing..    @Viognier @Grizzly

Hecter Plimmer - Next to Nothing.  Albert's Favourites records 2019.  Another Indie label in UK. Adam Scrimshire runs it and also is one of the main Artists.  stunning SQ and music. Anything from this label is worth grabbing.  Jazz, Funk, Electronica London scene music..

Nitin Sawhney - Beyond Skin.  Outcaste Records 1999.  Stunning SQ and music.  Thanks @ABG

Vanessa Fernandez - Use Me.  45rpm Groove Note one step 2019. Stunning SQ and music

Supertramp - Crime of the Century. Mobile Fidelity 1978.  One of the best ever Mofi releases IMO

Henry Mancini - Pink Panther. 45rpm Analogue Productions 2015.  Sounds sensational, grab the AP45rpm - well worth it for the step up in SQ

Burt Bacharach - Casino Royale. Classic records 4 LP boxset. 2009.  Considered the best Soundtrack release. Sounds sensational. Thanks @Doppelganger

I could list another 20-30....

Alan Parsons - I robot, Eye in the sky. Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon, Steely Dan - Aja, and so on..

I just bought the 2017 Supertramp - Breakfast in America mofi and I paid a couple of green ones for it, sealed unused etc as I've read that it's the one to have. Are you telling me the crime of the century mofi is another? Which release?

Crime of the century is a better Mofi release (IMO).  I have both.

1978 release.  The other Mofi for COTC is a boxset - which i don't have.

Afternoon in Paris John? @scuzzii

Sam Records or Japanese? Think you suggested the Japanese just edges out the Sam Records…

Yep, the Japanese edges out the Sam Records.  Afternoon is my all time favourite but sonically, not the equal of what I listed.

Honestly I am a big fan of The Surburbs by Arcade Fire with the revised track listing for the vinyl pressings. They sound fairly good though there is some clipping on the title track most likely due to the mastering process as it is present on digital and vinyl copies alike. The track order is just a lot more cohesive and flows better in the order on vinyl as opposed to digital variants.

Another album, Changa by PNAU, not sure what it is but the vinyl pressing of that just rustles my jimmies in a way the digital variant doesn't which is odd cause that is a nearly entirely digitally mastered album just goes to show mastering properly for the medium does wonders. Likewise, Flight Facilities' Down to Earth Tricolour pressing from 2019 is one of the best pressings of an album in my collection which is surprises because a) its a tricolour pressing and they traditionally are not the best sounding pressings out there and b) one of the colours is clear which are also traditionally one of the harder colours to get sounding silent but lo and behold they manage to for this album.

No MOFI's or Speakers Corner's or Analogue Production's here to speak of (not that I don't want any😀 and the one Mofi I do have is frankly not great), so here's a list of my 'go to' SQ LP's which might be of more interest to those on 'average' wages like me😉😅.....and not in any particular order.

Midnight Oil - Diesel and Dust - Australian 1st pressing......just so dynamic.

MJ - Thriller - Dutch 1st pressing (with Quincy Jones listed as sole producer).....who's surprised?

Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound - Australian 1st pressing.....truly astounding SQ from the land of Oz.

Donald Fagan - The Nightfly - Dutch 1st pressing.....no surprise here.

Steely Dan - Gaucho - US 1st pressing.....again, no surprise.

Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy - 1984 German reissue.....yep.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Welcome To The Pleasuredome - Canadian 1st pressing......SQ heaven, thank you Trevor Horn.

The Police - Synchronicity - Australian 1st pressing......dynamic plus.

Kansas - Self titled debut - 2018 MOV Dutch reissue on transparent vinyl.....surprisingly good.

Kansas - Leftoverture - 2014 MOV Dutch reissue.....super dynamic.

INXS - The Swing - Japanese 1st pressing.....kick arse bass.

ABC - The Lexicon Of Love - Australian 1st pressing.....another Horn special.

Yes - Big Generator - German 1st pressing.....Horn again.

Yes - 90210 - German 1st pressing.....go Horny!

Yes - Fragile - ?1979 Canadian reissue.....just a great recording and reissue.

Japan - Adolescent Sex - Japanese 1st pressing.....stunning dynamics.

Japan - Tin Drum - German 1st pressing.....hauntingly good sound.

Sade - Diamond Life - Dutch 1st pressing..... so smooth, so good.

Sade - Promise - Dutch 1st pressing.....yep, so smooth, so good.

Sade - Stronger Than Pride - Dutch 1st pressing.....you guessed it, so smooth, so good.

Kate Bush - Never For Ever - German 1st pressing.....dynamic detail.

Peter Gabriel - So - 2016 45RPM Half Speed Remaster.....brilliance further improved.

The The - Infected - Dutch 1st pressing.....insane dynamics.

Couple I have to mention. All these are fantastic pressings and the vinyl is quiet.

Kate Bush - 1986 The whole story - UK Pressing. Wow....

Fleetwood Mac - 2012 Rumors - Pressed at Pallas. Both 33 & the two 45rpm's are outstanding.

Madonna - Immaculate Collection - Australian first pressing.

Supertramp - Breakfast in America - 2018 Mofi.

Tame Impala - Currents.

Steely Dan - Can't by a thrill - UK first pressing ABC.

The Police - Synchronicity - Canada & US first pressings. Vinyl is transparent purple & brown.

More to come

Some great recommendations there - thanks Stevoz!  Good to note that the Aus pressing of the ABC album sounds good.  I love this and have the 1982 Mercury pressing (6359 099) and it sounds crap - what is your version?

Posted

A few mentions:

  • Dead Can Dance - Spirit Chaser and Into the Labyrinth - original releases (massive sound stages thanks to their recording venue)
  • Michael Hedges - Aerial boundaries (amazing detail, flawless recording) - Wyndham Hill
  • Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
  • The Blue Nile - Walk across the rooftops - Linn records (need i say anymore?)
  • Daft Punk - Discovery
  • Fever Ray - self-titled

Wow, I may have the same one🤨 (same cat. no.).....but mine sounds great. I will say it's fairly bright but it matters not, to me the SQ is excellent.

It's this one:  ABC – ABC – The Lexicon Of Love (1982, Vinyl) - Discogs (Post edit: this link won't embed.....but it's the first Australian pressing listed on the Discogs page for this album). Further checking indicates this is the only Australian pressing ever done of this LP, so we do have the same one.

The lacquer was cut at CBS Records, Artarmon in Sydney, the matrix runout indicates by Steve Smart, one of Australia's leading masterers/lacquer cutters. He later worked at the famed EMI Studios 301, where Don Bartley and Allan Parsons (not 'Project') worked.....in fact he still works there today (now called 301 Studios).

This is a very hard to find, low pressing album.

Face Records in Tokyo currently has a copy, with an OK cover (some dirty marks on back) but two good records.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/334702487428

I've used these guys many times and they nearly always do a good job grading, packing and shipping.

The shipped price isn't exactly magnificent, but we are at the very top of this vinyl market, so it might be the best you'll do.

Yep - I've been impressed by them and I know Eric uses them.  They are also on Discogs
