Mozart’s newest track (he hasn’t put out much in a while...):

Puzzling choice of pianist and instrument in this premiere.

I sometimes forget how much I love Bach. It’s probably after listening to any of his vocal music (that I admittedly do not care about). But his instrumental settings are truly transcendental, and time stopping.

I caught one of the French Suites on the radio in the car today, and thought, I need to spend some time with them. Curiously, I got stuck on the Hogwood harpsichord version (curious because Bach is said to have not been composing for any particular instrument – fight!)

This is one I keep coming back to:

Not only do they play just the way I like it – they’re not a HIP group I think, but they know how to make the score come alive and not ruin it with romantic treacle – but all of these recordings, which span more than a decade, sound great. Some of them are exemplary audiophile recordings.

Mozart Quartets: try the old Italian Quartet recordings, which were reissued as part of the Mozart Edition back in the 1990s. I have them as well as the above Hagen set. I think the Italians are perfectly suited to the Mozart. Their Beethoven set, which I also have, is beautifully played but slightly lacks the attack and insights that one gets from either the Hungarians (1960s) or our own Goldner Quartet [ABC records).
