A few months since this arrived.

The highlight for me is disc 1 with with the two piano concertos played by Krystian Zimerman and the Polish Festival Orchestra.  It is one of those wonderful and rare concerto recordings where the orchestra and soloist are in perfect alignment and willing to give the music time to breathe.  Piano is mixed marginally too close, but the orchestra is always clear and plays beautifully. This is also available separately ... www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/7930824

There are many, many great performances in this set and so far my attention has been caught by the Preludes (Rafal Blechacz) and the sonatas and scherzos played by Pollini and various pieces played by Anatol Ugorski.  This set also includes the cello sonata with Rostropovich and Argerich.

Something that does not work for me is to listen to a whole disc of mazurkas, even when Ashkenazy is playing.  Also, I have taken a dislike to Maria Jaoa Pires playing the Nocturnes and will stick with Arrau on vinyl for these.

The Royal Ballet, yellow vinyl edition from Blue Moon, wow! It sounds great, haven't heard AP issue but I am very happy with this one for sure. Unfortunately the cover arrived a bit damaged and the booklet inside has detached from the cover.... anyway the sound is great at least.

Recordings of cello music are overweight in my collection - that is the instrument I have played for most of my life.

This is one of my favorite recordings, which I purchased many years ago as download from Melba Recordings https://www.melbarecordings.com.au/catalogue/album/phoenix-story

It is my favorite recording of the Chopin cello sonata, ahead of 3 others in my collection (most recently Rostropovich/Argerich).  Maybe it's because of the youthful passion they bring to the music.  The sound quality is excellent.  This performance of the Rachmaninov cello sonata is also at the top of my list.

The pianist, David Tong, was a child prodigy who died too young as a pilot in PNG.  Very grateful that Melba has kept his memory alive in this recording and in his debut solo album.

A rubbish tip shop find but spotless and noiseless and an absolutely beautiful recording.
