Recent posts have made me decide that Shostakovich is to be the composer of listening choice during some rubbish Sydney weather, so I've just dug out some sets of the symphonies and will get started with the 1st Symphony at 11am and work my way through as many as I can throughout the day!

Tomorrow might be a String Quartets day!241182470_10111967332851070_170860461999123046_n.thumb.jpg.ab3cd0f57dffce6a41e28a015ab9d0e5.jpg

Just a small section of the Shostakovich section, everything is in boxes due to lack of space in the house but I'm currently ripping everything to my Innuos setup to play via Roon when the need arrives.

The Melodiya live and studio recordings of the symphonies always astound me everything I return to listen to them!

Great composer, the famous DSCH motif is probably the best part of his works, his quartets are my favourite.

He's always been a favourite of mine, especially when I had the chance to perform his works at Uni. The 5th Symphony was my first taste and then came the 1st Violin concerto which just blew me away (which of course features the DSCH motif as chords in the cadenza).

Just an amazing work!

Which quartet is the DG release there?

And I had not heard the Razumovsky Quartet - what label is that if you could be so kind please?

DG is the Emerson and it’s Oehms for the Rasumowsky 👍

Interesting - only ever seen the black/grey packaging for Emerson String Quartet version.  The Oehms label is ALSO new to me....hmmm...I have not been paying attention.

well it is world Opera day apparently. Seems fitting to listen to some legends then.

Something off the track up first...the mighty Jon VIckers in Berlioz grand opera Les Troyens.

continuing off the beaten track and the French theme...Horne, Scotto, Hines and McCracken in Meyerbeer's Le Prophete

See if Tony had a copy of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote” in his collection, I think you will quite enjoy that if he did.

Kavalier is a big one to start with :)

Magic Flute is much more listenable as KLM suggested. Also Tosca, La Boheme, Carmen all good choices for those not that familiar with the great art.

Enjoy

I had a look that one is not in there, he must not have liked Mozart much, only 3 albums 🙃

Flute is one of the very few Mozart albums in my  collection too 😆

Plenty of other good music to try out without having to go there ;)

Final one for the night. Wagner Der fliegende Hollander with the German's entertaining...Fischer Dieskau, Schock, Wunderlich.

Not the cast when I think of Wagner but anything with Wunderlich must be good.  So here's at it !
