Igor Levit - Beethoven Piano Sonatas (complete)

Just about to take the plunge with this set, but was wondering if there is anything better (or more interesting) out there?.....so many to choose from....it's bewildering.

I would highly recommend you DONT purchase his music, unless you can bear hearing his constant rumbling/growling sounds that he makes throughout the entire album.

Try to get your hands on the Annie Fischer recording instead, imho the recording sounds better and you won't hear weird animal sounds coming from her.

Mahler 1 on my newly put together horns. Sound much better now than previous temp setup.

I have been listening to various clips by other artists on youtube, etc....the Levit version seems to hold up on both interpretations and audio quality. It's a big investment for me, so I'm being a bit cautious....can only afford/justify one version. Cheers.

and of course hats off to Gould...https://www.openculture.com/2018/11/glenn-goulds-eccentricities.html

Some other opinions which you have probably already found:

I draw attention to an acknowledgement of Levit's recent output that makes reference to Gould's humming without drawing a comparison to Levit doing the same (at least on this recording of the three composers variations) -  https://thehigharts.com/igor-levits-variations-bach-beethoven-rzewski/ .  His recording of the late sonatas before recording the full cycle I recall as being enjoyable to listen to. Levit's Beethoven cycle was Gramophone magazine's Instrumental category pick of 2020.  Conceding Sony have worked hard promoting his rising star, but that in and of itself doesn't directly lead to such recognition.

Whichever way you jump, including Fischer's,  you'll have a marvelous time enjoying your choice of performer's sound world.  Since you use Presto the short track preview option may also be a good resource between performers to hear interpretation differences between your short list.  While only your ear can be final judge, being forwarned by the critical assessment of others is a great way to be 1) forearmed and 2) enthused for when you settle back and listen to your final choice.  Which you will obviously have to share here when you make it!  🙂

Thanks so much for all of that.....I'll certainly share with you my final choice. Cheers.......John.

Hmm, Gould's humming was the first thing I thought of but wasn't going to go there!
