powerav Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 I have been experimenting with transmission line speaker enclosures after building a rough one with plywood and jaycar drivers and an old diy crossover I thought to use the drivers and crossover from a pair of B&W 601s and some spotted gum panels from Bunnings, all I can say the sound is definitely bigger with more bass, very impressive to the untrained ear but probably lacking in a bit of finesse anyway it’s been fun and good to hear a clear difference from a new box. 4 1
powerav Posted January 24, 2023 Author Posted January 24, 2023 I’m nervous to say it but in particular for rock music these are better than my Magnepan.7 with subs. 1

Type 1 Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Nice Work! I used to own a pair of 601s and while I thought they sounded ok, wondered if more could be done with them… ( the drivers looked fancy but the boxes were made out of maybe 12 mm Particle board and the cross over had very few components and they looked cheap.. sadly I sold them during Covid, while I was cleaning out stuff. I work for a boutique plywood place with easy access to free CNC, so I should have done what you did! Hopefully you will get them to sound the way you want!

The crossover are actually very good but they can be upgraded which I didn’t do. I’ve been bit the bug now and looking for used speakers of similar vintage and quality to upgrade. http://rutcho.com/tweaks/01_bw_dm601s3/bw_dm601s3.html
Type 1 Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 I had the series #2…. There was one resistor, one capacitor and one coil… all very small…

Type 1 Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Indeed! They were exciting little speakers, but compared to my current speakers they could get a little fatiguing… perhaps caused by that crossover? love your work!! nice veneer too!

But then I go back to the Maggie’s and get all the luscious airyness, soundstaging, imaging and all the other audiophile cliches, makes you realise what a great hobby this is.
powerav Posted February 15, 2023 Author Posted February 15, 2023 After weeks of listening to these I’m even more impressed especially for rock music, they have become my main listening speakers, I’m after a pair of B&w 602s2s now to see how much of an improvement they would be
