I had a couple of weeks off for Xmas and had an idea to do a speaker project. I decided to do a transmission line design as this was a design I'm not too familiar with and I always want to try something new. The Coral design looks the sexy-ist to my eyes.

I had some offcuts material sitting around for donkey years and I figured it's time now or the bin.

17mm custom wood, New Guinea Rosewood.

Corners are Meranti rounded over.

Finish: Cabot's satin polyurethane.img_1674432425006.thumb.jpg.c7ba0b302003588df3348b541454f148.jpg

The driver can be removed and a quick speaker/ baffle change can happen. There are 4 bolts for easy change.img_1674432423851.thumb.jpg.b650d7ab2a3efab92c37302768f4ebd1.jpg

Here's another well worth trying! It's a tractrix expansion horn.

Plans for the Alfredo horn, will work with Tang Band WB 1772, Fostex 206, 208 sigma or Lowther.

Also consider the 8 inch drivers from Lii Audio

from the late Alf Lepp. I knew him personally, I gave him the original from the guy mentioned in the plans.

regards Ian

Very nice build. I got a pair of Supravox full rangers coming and transmission line is certainly being considered. Is the cabinet plan available to share?

Yes, very nice work...and how do they sound?

Only early days and of course sound is subjective..... A bit boomy and needs taming. I haven't any sound absorbing material yet as I'm interested in in hearing the bare bones acoustic version. The plan includes a small amount of material directly behind the driver which I see needing. I'm surprised how much bass it produces. Acoustic strings sounds Amazing. I suspect the resonance inspires a life likeness. Rock not so good needs plenty of tone correction.

Google images- Coral beta. You'll find them.

Attached my cutting list. Note it is drawn for a 18mm edging and not butt or mitred edged.img_1674449246549.thumb.jpg.f648ed052bdb32e53bbb1590299b9a57.jpg

Great plan, it is absolutely needed to tame the driver. What material/pad do you plan to use? Some say to use natural wool (sheepskin).

As a starting point I'll begin with an off cut of high pile wool carpet directly behind and above the driver. There's not a lot of room.  If it needs more I've got various damping material from speakers past.

From the get go, the only driving factor I had was to spend zero dollars. Even the speakers were given to me.

How do you find the different driver sizes perform in the enclosures? I'm going to build something similar, or back loaded design with the aim of switching different full range drivers via a variety of front panels. I wasn't sure if I'd need different enclosures for 10" and 12" drivers (mayber even 8").

The jury is still out. There's more experimentation to do.

It takes about 5 minutes remove the front baffle and switch in a different configuration. Easy and uneventful. Works a treat.

There is the extra work needed to set up each individual baffle/ configuration. when done it's all fun

I was convinced the 8" cabinet size was justifiable in my circumstances.

a 12" swappable configuration is possible ad is next.

If you look at the cabinet sizes between the 12" & 8"it may be useful in making up your mind.

A two way from a 70's  quadraphonic system.

The high frequency paper tweeter has a single cap and the low frequency driver runs full.

The horn is enclosed in some bamboo boxes found at big W.
