Several of the vinyl discs played when I was listening to Mother Earth Klassic yesterday had very intrusive clicks and pops. A bit earlier this morning I heard a digital source on Mother Earth Klassic -- no clicks and pops or groove noise (but some breathing sounds!) -- followed by the playing of a vinyl disc. The needle drop for that vinyl disc could be heard, following by groove noise, then the music, and from time to time relatively low level clicks and pops. It's good that groove noise is not too noticeable at ordinary listening levels. Vinyl is indeed viable in that regard, despite the "noise floor" just from tracking a silent lead-in groove being much much higher than the noise floor of typical CDs. Obviously it is important to keep vinyl discs away from dust particles. Older readers would have grown up with AM radio static and cassette tape hiss. Once you get used to the low noise floor of a CD or of a DAB+ transmission, even low level clicks and pops from dust on a vinyl record can be distracting.

danTheMan1503560646 Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Sorry to revive this topic but I have some observations comparing ABC Classic's FM and DAB+ reception in Perth. I have noticed similar things in the car radio and a Marantz stereo 70s receiver. Firstly, the FM is much louder so I have to tweak the volume to get a like for like comparison. I found the FM to have a lot more high frequency content. The DAB sounds muffled in comparison. This extends to when the presenters are speaking, there is a clear rolloff in the sounds. Especially noticeable when there is a bright piece of music playing. Does anyone else notice this or could it just be my receivers. I don't notice it as much with the digital TV equivalent broadcast, but I haven't been able to test this side by side with DAB yet. I wouldn't have thought AAC at near enough to 120k would produce this noticeable an effect.
georgehifi Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 I can do a direct A/B switch between ABC Classic-DAB+ and ABC Classic-FM on my home system (not the car) and much prefer the DAB+ separation/dynamics/and noise level. Cheers George
danTheMan1503560646 Posted February 2 Posted February 2 I agree DAB is better for noise. Do you notice a difference in the top end though George?
georgehifi Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 Yes as I have ribbon tweeters (don't know about car tweeters) and the DAB+ is the preferred one, (btw this is coming from the digital output of a Marantz NA7004 to the MSB R2R discrete dac). I also have a proper FM external antenna and DAB+ antenna, which the length of would not suit a car. Vertically polarized at 82cm tip to tip (41cm each half) Cheers George
