BRS Posted April 28, 2023 Posted April 28, 2023 If you don't mind me asking. Did you buy direct or manage to source locally?
Fidelity Hi Posted May 1, 2023 Author Posted May 1, 2023 I purchased direct, the team at Geshelli are great to deal with and the upgrades can all be done via the website now. When I ordered, they purchased the opamps for me and sent me an invoice - such great customer service. More importantly the Geshelli J2 sounds fantastic in my opinion, I much prefer the sound of my system now. 1 1

I did a build also with the Trohet and you can see the result below. 6mm zebrano veneer over birch ply for me. was great. i am keen for advice on amp set up as i have an old media amp. I am seeking a good setup with wifi for airplay and bluetooth. I don't want to spend more than $1500 in total. I know that is a low bar. I am also building Some Trohet R which is a much higher end 7 1
Timster Posted July 28, 2023 Posted July 28, 2023 Love that finish! For $1500 you could try the Bluesound Powernode Edge (~ $1200 retail) or its bigger brother the Powernode (~ $1600 retail) All in one solutions, with all the streaming options, airplay, bluetooth and more. Or maybe you can grab a second hand NAD with the built in BluOS module. There are other options too, I'm sure, but these spring straight to mind. 1
Fidelity Hi Posted August 4, 2023 Author Posted August 4, 2023 After seeing a few stories on Instagram from The Speaker Project and subsequent conversation with Atlas, I thought I would make the following tweaks to slightly improve performance. The objective is more bass from a better seal around the port and tweeter, with greater bass extension from adding the carpet into the port. However, some of the bass gain is offset by the carpet/extension. Added rubber backed carpet to the port Roof silicon to seal the port 1mm thick double sided tape around the tweeter, mine was very gel like All the materials cost around $30 from bunnings and it only took an hour or so to make the changes. Photos below, I added more silicone to the port after the photo and would encourage people doing the same not to be shy with the amount used to create a great seal. I was trying to avoid a messy clean up, but comes it comes off the speaker easily. The sound - I couldn’t complete an A/B test as I did both speakers at once. So it hard to say if I’m looking for confirmation bias of my own handy work, but it does sound like a more polished speaker than before! More bass, slightly deeper and I feel like less resonance. For the time and effort required it is a great little upgrade. Whilst off the stands, I took the opportunity to apply some furniture wax. 4

dontlament Posted August 7, 2023 Posted August 7, 2023 I've just ordered a Trophet kit from Atlas. Looking forward to the project and of course the outcome! 1

Looking forward to the project and of course the outcome! @dontlament enjoy the build, it is a thoroughly rewarding process. I would also incorporate the tweaks above. I’ve had plenty of time to listen to speakers after sealing the cabinet further and believe I can hear the difference. It sounds like it digs deeper and I can definitely feel more bass. The tweeter was previously plastic on wood, the port had hot glue but not to the extent of the roofing silicone. Air would be escaping in those two spots under load from the scan speak woofer. The Trohets have taken another step upwards and comprehensively beat my B&W’s in all areas. I’m sticking to my ‘more polished’ review from last time. I also spent some time taking the Geshelli J2 DAC (AKM Version with Sparkos Op Amp upgrade) in and out of the system during a long listening session. Compared to the Bluesound node, the sound signature is spot on for my preferences. Plus the greater instrument separation, depth and detail retrieval provides such listening enjoyment. The J2 really make the Trohet’s sing and demonstrate what an accomplished speaker it is! I would listen to one track direct from the node, then add the J2 back into the chain and listen to the track again. I repeated this process 4 or 5 times and probably easiest to say that I’m very happy with the purchase. They also have ESS chip options to suit different preferences and fabulous customer service! Gino and Sherri was so helpful during the purchasing and upgrade process. I’m really enjoying my system at the moment… yet craving some Trohet R+’s…. I’ve certainly caught the bug! 1
dontlament Posted August 21, 2023 Posted August 21, 2023 @Fidelity Hi yep I'll definately do those tweaks as I go. Atlas mentioned them too, and they seem pretty straightforward!
JMN1999 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 I have a pair of trohets ( with upgrades) made by the owner of the speaker project. I recently have tried to sell them on this site. ( it’s a tough market atm ) boy! am I so glad that I was not able to sell them! Whilst these were great with my previous setup ( purifi class d power amp using a burson soloist GT as a preamp) my PMC 25’s eclipsed them ( which was expected given the price difference etc) however changing my amp to the more beefy A/B class Roksan Blak somewhat changed things back in favour of the trohets the extra warmth and current made a world of difference. Still like the PMC’s for drum and bass music styles however am enjoying the trohets for most other genres. The trohets certainly provide some amazing value and scalability but certainly need some decent current and warmth to get the most out of them. 3
Fidelity Hi Posted March 22, 2024 Author Posted March 22, 2024 Just thought I would provided some updates on my end to my set up, demonstrating that the Trohet's can scale up. I purchased the Geshelli J2S AK4499 about 6 months ago, with sparkos SS3602 on the XLR side. What an excellent improvement over the previous AKM version and definitely worth the upgrade. There is plenty of reviews online, so I won't go into the usual audiophile descriptive language other than it is sounds so much more lifelike! Geshelli are such a joy to deal with and make top class products. Shortly after this, I purchased an IFI ipower X primarily as I didn't like using a US to AUS power plug converter for the J2 DAC. Given we live in a 100 year old house an electric work of at least half that age (with many linked circuits), it surprisingly made an audible difference. A much darker background and solid boost in performance. A few weeks ago due to a kitchen renovation, we moved to 3 phase power with new grounding wire and had a new circuit board installed. I took the opportunity to have the stereo run on its own dedicate circuit. Once again, a solid step up in the improvement of sound. Someone smarter might have to explain why, but I'm guessing similar to the above. The Trohets have continued to scale up nicely which each step along the way. I'm really enjoying each listening session and it has temporarily curbed the temptation to build the Trohet R... Any readers out there that have made the jump up that can provide feedback? 1
JMN1999 Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Would be interested to hear of feedback from people with the trohet R. The trohets offer great value but in comparison to my branded speakers could not match them at ranges above the mid range imo. The upgrade to the R with a more sophisticated cross over and a better scanspeak tweeter should address this. Again it would be interesting to hear of people’s experiences.
Fidelity Hi Posted March 25, 2024 Author Posted March 25, 2024 On a recent trip to Sydney, I did drop into the show room for Atlas and Hurd (his non DIY speaker brand) to listen to the Trohet R's. They sounded very impressive, but hard to comment given I didn't do an A/B comparison and it wasn't the same partnering equipment. They new tweeter and crossover we certainly a solid step up. Perhaps @Peter_JS can share more. Just found this: 1
DMJL Posted March 15 Posted March 15 (edited) I may be late to the party but I wanted to share my build. (Full review will be provided soon - All positive). Adding the pictures first below before the review Edited March 15 by DMJL 1
