zeds Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 Was wondering if someone have experience or ideas how to go about upgrading the crossover of my beloved JBL 120ti Couldn't find much information on line The Is one guy his name is "speakerchef" that sells pre made crossover on eBay us for many speakers including the 120ti using Nedlub caps for about 550 aud landed in Australia Not sure if this represents good value for money? Any thoughts? Does anyone have experience with him Or can help with some ideas how to go about upgrading the crossover myself Any help will be much appreciated Cheers
kelossus Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Great speakers. If you picked up that pair off Facebook a few weeks ago you did extremely well. They looked absolutely mint. Take one of the crossovers out and send it to Nigel at Speakerbug. He will build you ready to go crossovers that will mount in the factory position. I wouldn't bother with that pair on Ebay. What's the point in upgrading them if you're just going to use sand cast resistors again? Alternatively Nigel (or possibly someone local) can swap out the components on the factory board. Besides the crossovers I would get the foam damping plug replaced in the tweeter. This would be the first thing I do before the crossovers.
zeds Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 Thanks kelossus ! I Will look up this guy for the crossover Regarding the foam replacement Do u know what kind of foam is preferred to use and what's the best way to attach it to the magnet? I'm guessing it's pretty straight forward DIY job ? ( from a video I've just watched on it ) is there a Tip I should know about? Thanks again for your help

Thanks again for your help Expand I've used quality open cell foam in the past. I cut it into a circle as per the original. I can't remember the exact dimensions but I think it was around 10mm high and the diameter is just a little bit smaller than the pole piece. Once you have it apart it's easy to determine. It can be difficult to remove the diaphragm. I get tooth picks and wedge them between the magnet and the ply backer on the diaphragm. Leave it for a few hours and it should pop off easily. zeds Posted February 5, 2023 Author Posted February 5, 2023 Thanks for this! Did u glue the new foam to the magnet or just put it in place and close it back If u glue it what do u think I should use? I see one guy using a thin double side tape to keep it in place https://youtu.be/yFZleC0Y4SoThanks This is the video by the way

The diaphragm is not attached to the face. I used a small dab of EVA glue on the pole piece to hold the foam. Once the diaphragm is screwed in the foam can't move.
