Guest Multidimension Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Location: Cronulla NSWPrice: $3000 Negotiable.Item Condition: 9/10Reason for selling: No longer used. See Below.Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, DepositExtra Info: These are my brother's wonderful Shahinian Obelisk speakers purchased new by him in 1999 from Audio One in Sydney. They still have their original boxes and cost AUD5,286 (before Shahinian decided to double their pricing). They are practically in as-new condition cosmetically and have never been opened or repaired. However, I noticed that the drones are slightly sagged. These could be inverted to compensate I guess. They produce a superb ambient and reflective sound illusion and look fantastic. They have the titanium dome midrange and W shaped titanium dome super tweeters. They're certainly not studio monitors, but they do create something very special. If they don’t sell, I'll take them for my family room. This model has been in production since 1977 and the current iteration (which looks the same) costs around USD10,000 in the US (although they are Canadian). I believe that they have a labyrinth (transmission line) to the rear drone. Pick up is preferred at Cronulla, but the original boxes mean that they could probably be couriered in two goes. We will make shipping enquiries, but the cost would be the buyer's. Reason for sale is that he has moved to a DEQX active system with Legend Tikandi speakers. Any questions welcome. I will also donate 2% of the final price to match what I would have to pay elsewhere. Any questions welcome. Price is a guess. Will see what interest there is. Ian
oceangreen17 Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Fabulous looking and rare speakers! Best wishes for the sale
Guest Multidimension Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 No worries... donations done (for this and three other listings)
muzzagruzz Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Hi, How does your brother like the Legend Tikandi speakers? Just curious as I love Legend speakers - I run the Kantu 6's with my ME gear. GLWTS too. T
Guest Multidimension Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I reckon he likes them since he bought a second pair. Dr Crawford has been testing them without the tweeter waveguides and different (ScanSpeak Beryllium) tweeters instead of the (whatever they were... Visiton?) which he says provide an improvement, so brother ordered a pair. They need a spacer ring to compensate for the "generic" waveguide cut-out apparently.
muzzagruzz Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 Thanks for the info multidimension - glad he likes them. They are superbly designed and manufactured speakers - and Australian!
Luc Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 These are the speakers in question. I've never seen a pair before.I posted the pics for lazy buggers like me who couldn't be arsed following external links. GLWTS. *Are they difficult to drive btw?
Guest Multidimension Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Oh sorry for my hopeless external links. I'm new here and quite dumb. I believe that Paul Keating had a pair of these. I just saw that question in microdot. I don't know if they're difficult to drive. My brother had them on his D200 Audio Research amp and they sounded fine to me. I do not know how low their impedance curve dips however. With all those drivers under the pyramid bit who knows what might go on in the midrange/treble. My guess is that with just the single bass driver they wouldn't be too demading on current. The thing that looks like a second bass driver is just a passive radiator. Apparenly is is fed by an internal transmission line. No doubt there's info out there somewhere. Anyway I think that once someone who knows what they are sees them they might just fly out the door.
Guest Multidimension Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) "had". Brother met him in audition room at Audio Connection and he said he had Shahinians. It was along ago. Edit: ha ha - oops - I didn't know "Diapason" was another Shahiinian model. So there you go. I just spoke with him re difficulty of driving question and he said that they were a bit better on his Musical Fidelity Kilowatt 500. Don't ask - it was sold. Anyway, powerful amps are cheap. If I end up with them I'll just put them on my 400W Hypex DIY. Edited November 2, 2013 by Multidimension
Guest The Fresh Prince Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) I can confirm that these really shine with bags of power and plenty of space. They are not suitable for low powered amps. For the flat-earthers out there these are often paired with Naim, but Naim XS is not up to the task. People have reported great success with Plinius, Dynavector, higher end Naim, Bedini and higher powered Creek. I'm sure there are many other candidates that would do a fine job. If you've been curious amount pseudo-omnis, Shahanians, want a great looking piece of furniture and an intriguing, although atypical, presentation this would be a fine opportunity. I'm fairly sure they are manufactured in New York (not Canada), although I am willing to be corrected. I am also fairly sure the "owner" or someone high up in Plinius ahs a pair of Shahinians. Go on, give 'em a go! Edited October 23, 2013 by teddyboy
Guest Multidimension Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 (edited) Yeah - I could be wrong about "Canadian". Edit: Just looking at the photo of the bottom face it shows "New York" in a faint imprint. Edited October 23, 2013 by Multidimension
Guest Multidimension Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 These have been sold. Brother said that as the buyer lifted one in its 14 year old plastic bag to lower it into its box... need I go on? Anyway sold.
