bob_m_54 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 This is related to my Fetch TV remote control, but could be the same for other remote controllers that had a weight inside to give them that "quality" chunky heavy feel. My Fetch TV remote control had been dropped a couple of times, and ended up having a rattle... But it still worked perfectly. I did try to open it up, which is normally pretty easy for most others, but this one was a bit awkward to get apart. So seeing as it was still functioning OK, I just kept using it. A this morning it got dropped again, and landed on it's but (bottom end) on a hard tiled floor. The damn thing now didn't work. So, left with no other choice, I persisted and finally opened it up, and this is what I found. A small plastic tab had broken off, which would have been the original rattle. The tab that helps locate a chunk of steel about 48mm long, 14mm wide and nearly 4mm thick, in the back cover of the control. This is what gives it that chunky "quality heavy" feel. the pics are taken with the bottom end of the remote at the top. Yeah i should have thought that through eh? When the remote is assembled, the weight sits just above two surface mount ICs on the controller cct board. The missing tab will now let the weight slide towards the bottom end of the remote, if you drop it again on it's end, and this is what happens. Unfortunately now unrepairable. Moral of the story is.... don't drop your remote controllers on a hard surface... LOL But why put that stupid chunk of steel in there anyway, or at least glue the sucker in .... sheesh. 1

rocky500 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 At least your remote to replace might be quite cheap if this one? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175127500899 3

Actually I went the expensive route. I ordered a new later model Fetch Maxi fro $384.00 delivered. I already have an original model Maxi, and two Fetch Minis, but I'd been pondering updating to the newer model for a while. But as you can only have three Fetch devices on the one account, I'll retire one of the minis, and keep it as a spare. And use the remote from the retired Mini on my Maxi.... Yeah, I know what I mean... hahahaha
rocky500 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 You could order a remote anyway, for that next time you drop the remote again. 1

bob_m_54 Posted February 21, 2023 Author Posted February 21, 2023 Well that was quick. The Fetch Mighty arrived about an hour ago, and is set up and running now. Pretty quick seeing as I ordered it online on Sunday, not long after posting the initial Post. The only dillema I have now is that when selecting record from the Fetch Mini in the bedroom, it always wants to record to the old Fetch Maxi in the lounge room. Haven't figured out how to set priority on that yet..
Addicted to music Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 $384 is a lot of money! So it better be quick and good!

audiofeline Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 Having replaced the remote you have nothing to loose by trying to resolder the original, you might end up with a spare remote! If your new remote feels heavy you might want to remove the useless weight. Unfortunate that the IC had it's legs ripped off. If it's bloody arms had been ripped off we could blame Auntie Jack 1
