sumoxui Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Hi all, I purchased Meze Empyreamn from fellow stereonet member a few months back and I noticed the right driver crackles when i move my head or essentially when there is a pressure change when sealed. There is no audio performance issues, driver sounds fine, just annoying that I got to stay quite still when listening. I don't seem to be getting anywhere with the local distributor... any help is appreciated. Here is a youtube video of the issue.
barbz127 Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Out of curiosity have you swapped to the other pads to see if it's something in the pad itself?

Bengineer Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 Its not abnormal. They just loosen to a point and it starts happening. I've had it happen on Susvaras, for example. The looser diaphragm ones can sometimes stick to the magnets too. HE6 for example. DCA Ether apparently susceptible to the crinkle too. And certainly Audeze units can do it. Never heard it on the Final planars.
sumoxui Posted October 4, 2022 Author Posted October 4, 2022 is it something I can send back for repair, or would it even be worth repairing as I guess it may need a driver replacement?
Bengineer Posted October 4, 2022 Posted October 4, 2022 You'd have to ask them if they would accept that. Planar crinkle is a thing. If it was really bad, I'm sure they'd help you out.
PassionForSound Posted October 18, 2022 Posted October 18, 2022 I had this issue once on an early pair (which went back IIRC) so it is a thing like has been said here. Makes no difference to the SQ as you say, but I found it a bit annoying too
Mightygrey Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 This has happened on many planars I've owned/listened to over the years. It was particularly noticeable in the Sine DX. It's a little annoying when you take the headphones on/off but otherwise I never perceived it to be a manufacturing fault.
Bengineer Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 I had the diaphragm stick to the magnet on a HE6 and a Susvara. Have to keep it playing until it "popped" off or press the pad to try get it to unstick. What you want from $7000 headphones isn't it 1 1
sumoxui Posted October 30, 2022 Author Posted October 30, 2022 contacted Meze and got both drivers replaced under warranty. Thanks everyone! 1
RossFlet Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 Just an inquiry of any owners of these amazing headphones - well, amazing when they work. My pair bought in early 2021 worked fine until a short time before (fortunately) the guarantee ran out one driver suddenly failed. They were returned to Meze in Romania who said they replaced both drivers. Now 12 months later the same scenario. These headphones are always handled with care. They were working in the evening and the following morning one side was dead presumably death occurred when I fired them up in the morning. Anyone had similar experience? They are running with a Burson headphone amp. Nothing special.

IIRC they had some batches reported to be frying some things Also Empyrean drivers known to fail. So there is that.

Damned good amps. Now that Meze have moved on to the Elites with different drivers will they continue to support the Empyreans? It's a bit concerning

It's a bit concerning Empyreans are an ongoing model, not replaced by the Elites as I understand it so you should be fine for support. I'd expect they'll take care of you in the circumstances so I'd reach out to the retailer you bought them from or whoever provided the warranty service the first time around

Doesn't mean much, Utopia has plenty failures, and most other brands.... 1

Just for the record, The Empyreans were returned to Meze who repaired them at no charge again. They did advise that the headphones should be in a dry, cool environment and not in direct sunlight. This may have been part of my problem - now remedied. Something important to consider with planars apparently 2
