What does one do when they're looking for the right pair of speakers with a story? One builds them! So for my 40th, a great mate bought me a turntable. We're both amateur home theatre nerds who also love music. Wanting to do it justice, and set it up in my bar area, I started looking for an amp and a set of speakers. The former proved much easier; I found a second hand one-owner NAD 3220 PE (with matching 5420 CD player) for a great price from a older gentleman who bought them to play music for his mothers funeral. He we cleaning out his apartment and decided he 'was too old to listen to loud music these days'. Finding speakers was a bit more of a challenge. I had scoured the second hand market for something that was a bit special at a fair price, and even went auditioning some entry level decent speakers. I nearly settled on a set of Encel Gelati speakers as this was about my budget but was compromising after hearing what $1000 new can buy (I did like the B&W 607s....). Then I stumbled on The Speaker Project. I emailed Atlas and then ended up on the phone with him for nearly 45 minutes chatting about the Copenhagen kit. That night I ordered them....

So the whole project took me a about a fortnight to complete. I didn't want to rush them as was working on them in the evenings once the kids were in bed. Atlas was great to chat to throughout the process, and I'm sure he got sick of my emails about this and that. I bought the pine kit and ended up tailoring the set a little, adding bypass caps to the tweeters, paining the front black and then wrapping the rest in a blackbutt veneer. The finished result looked amazing and once the woofer and tweeter loosened up after a few hours listening they sounded even better! There's a richness in the bottom end, and a clarity that has got me hearing nuances in music I hadn't heard previously. Even better, I knew these speakers were a one off, a pair I had poured my time and love into creating, speakers with a story which will give me years of happiness. Thank you Atlas!
