Agreed.  :thumb:

I'm afraid I don't quite agree with you there, Ray ("any amp with any spkr")!

Try driving a pair of 3-way Maggies with a SET and I suggest you will blow the true-ribbon - even at a low volume level ... because the SET will be clipping.  :o

Or single driver full range speakers with a high power class ab or d amp. Sounds like absolute shite! Depending on efficiency generally far happier with fleawatt to 50WPC class A solid state, or various tube amps (single ended, push pull, OTL etc). I guess there might be an exemption to this generalisation though not in my personal experience.

Heck with my current 98db @ 1W/1M sensitive speakers I struggle to play quietly enough with my 15WPC power amp but damn doesn’t it sound glorious! May be a bit more of a challenge when my new 103db @ 1W/M speakers arrive next weekend though I’m sure I’ll figure it out somehow :)

Matty I'm a fan of your work, no doubt, but just want to check what you are saying here.

You like low power amps, fair enough, but is this directed particularly towards use with full range drivers (which very few people run), or is it more a general diagnosis?  Like most folks, I guess(?) I run 90dB-ish multi-driver speakers, and I have to say that I prefer 500+W per channel to get the best out of them. Have we taken a wrong turn here?

No, I was merely saying that the "any amp with any spkr" generalisation was a poor one. Enough power to control a driver well is only part of the equation. There is certainly such thing as too much power though I’m not aware of whether it’s actually too much power or just exposing the shortcomings of class AB or D power amps. That was specific to full range driver based speakers though I myself generalised :)

I suspect that's a question of gain rather than power.

I've happily run higher sensitivity speakers with significantly higher powered amps

Never fear!

They'll be back asking why their 'XYZ' blew up anyway!

So i hooked up the new crown amp - a display model that was in absolute brand new perfection condition.

And WOW ! The improvement ..... the bass !!! I could start to feel the walls vibrating with the improvement in power.

It sounded more crisp, and less bright.

I haven't even done the YPAO tests - but the upgrade from crown xli1500 to xli 2500 was without doubt the biggest change in my audio system ever !

I tested the song Vanilla Ice - Ninja rap and i could literally start to feel pure, club like bass that i had slighty before, but now had so much more of.

Ah man ❤️

And with ebay discount, and the fact it was a display B grade stock, only paid $720 for it....

:D
