didier Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Hi guys, I can't claim this as a home build as I'm not building them at all, just assembling the bits, but a cabinet maker friend is building me some Altec 612 replica cabinets. 3/4" birch ply with a dressing birch veneer over the top. They'll be loaded with Altec 604 duplex 15" coaxials when they're done. There's a fair bit of work to be done in the meantime, crossovers built etc but thought i'd share some progress shots. 2
lovetube Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 congrat didier . very high quality cabs lovely built. Duc 2
didier Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Thanks Duc! Yes he's extremely good. In the middle photo you can see the one on the right is dressed in its veneer, the left one is still in its raw state. I've always admired the simplicity of the 612 Utility cabs, of course normally they are painted grey but i love the birch so much i think i'll just lacquer or oil them. 1
henry218 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 good plys, i like the euro birch as well, i used them exclusively for the last 4 projects i did. 1

damohpi Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 nice, they look well made. what crossover are you planning on using? and drivers - 604E ? 2
blinky Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Ooooh nice! The cabinets aren't huge then I'm guessing? Bill 1
didier Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Drivers will be 604D, basically the same as the 604C, crossovers built by Werner, the fellow who makes Jabo horns. The cabinets are not high, no. I suppose normally in studios they would have been desk or wall mounted. I'll have to experiment!
damohpi Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 good choice on crossovers, was going to suggest them if not.. 1
didier Posted December 9, 2013 Author Posted December 9, 2013 The crossovers arrived. Werner specials: 2
Gee Emm Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 Won't the iron-core (instead of air-core) inductors saturate? Graham
damohpi Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 I doubt it, the drivers in question are only rated to 35W, you would exceed that long before those cores saturate 1
didier Posted December 10, 2013 Author Posted December 10, 2013 Won't the iron-core (instead of air-core) inductors saturate? Graham No, they'll be fine.

Guest atilsley Posted December 10, 2013 Posted December 10, 2013 Lovely work...well done. A couple of q's: What's the internal volume of the cab? What's the approx cost of the xovers? What sort of 604...vintage or Great Plains? I've built large cabs for the 604 and other Altec components...so I'm really keen to see how yours turns out. All the best. Andrew

Andrew Hi, I'll answer in sequence - Internal volume of each cab is approximately 195 litres - $600ish - Vintage, 604D - Cheers! Yes there may be better and bigger deisgns for all out bass reproduction but I've heard these and love them. Still some time off finishing them and away for the holidays so I'd anticipate they'll be done by late Feb.
