Furutechfan Posted June 25, 2023 Posted June 25, 2023 Hi guys, I am a planar speaker fan and have been leading up on ET lft 8b speakers. Price wise it seems like its good value relative I have been very pleased with my capacitor modded 1.7 maggies for some time. I am wondering if anyone in Melbourne has a set of ET speakers and if they could chime in on ET vs Magnepan sound.
Herbyj Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Hi Funny I'm looking at Eminent Technology speakers, I also have the Magnepan 1.7i. I have just bought the MYE stands for the 1.7i and they make a big difference. I understand Eminent now make an LTF-8C speaker which has an upgraded bass unit which is bipolar and has it's own amp and DSP control. Also, I think they were showing a prototype of a new, much bigger speaker at a recent HI Fi show in the USA. There are a couple of discussions online comparing the ET speakers to Maggies and most seem to prefer the ET. I'd be surprised if there are any ET speakers in Australia. Hope this helps. Herby
Furutechfan Posted June 28, 2023 Author Posted June 28, 2023 Thanks Herby. Good feedback on the mye stands. I am wondering whether a diy brace would do the same job as importing the mye stands would be very cost prohibitive.

Herby With regards to the 8c, i was concerned that my very "expensive" signal via tube dac would be going through another dsp. Bruce mentioned to me that he could customise the signal procesing so that anything above 100hz does not go through the dsp. There are obviously going to be disadvantages with that approach . Herbyj Posted June 28, 2023 Posted June 28, 2023 Hi I thought only the bass went through the DSP, the the midrange and treble went through a passive crossover? I'm an analog guy so I'm not sure that I like that DSP approach. I think Magnepan are going to release a DSP controlled cone dipole bass unit. So that might be something to look at to go with your 1.7i. On the Maggies, what did you change in the crossover? I've seen there are kits from OS to upgrade the crossover. Cheers Herby

As @Herbyjsaid ... braced stands greatly improve Maggies; I had a mate who's a metal-worker, make up braced stands for my IIIAs - and subsequently, my 'Frankenpans'. See here: As you're in Melbourne if you want to PM me, I can give you his contact details. Edited June 28, 2023 by andyr
Herbyj Posted June 29, 2023 Posted June 29, 2023 The MYE stands aren't actually very expensive, it's the air freight that costs. I was in Canada, near where the stands are made, and bought them back as excess luggage so the cost wasn't much. Solid stands, which support the whole speaker, make a very big difference to the sound of Magneplanar speakers. Herby

Cheers Herby I basically replaced all the capacitors and inductor with the same values but used mundorf supreme caps. It made a massive difference resulting in improved transparency and dynamics..like a thick veil was lifted from the speakers.
