Teflonso Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Hi everyone Im new around these parts, and was wondering if i could receive some assistance from one of the guru's on a set of mystery PYE speakers I have?? These would date back to at least the early 70's and were originally hooked up to a PYE radio/casette/turntable. I think it said MR2 and london england on top of the record player. The speakers themselves have 2 pin DIN connectors on them and id like to somehow adapt them to work in a modern music player as Ive never seen the connection before. I have photos as well just need to figure out how to upload them. Any help very much appreciated! Cheers
surprisetech Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Altronics http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=P1120 or Jaycar http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP0300 a soldering iron, solder and some figure 8 speaker wire and you'll be off and running.
Teflonso Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 Thanks buddy, are PYE speakers highly regarded in the vintage market? I will post some pictures of the speakers once I get hold of a computer. Cheers
surprisetech Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 At that vintage they might be OK, but difficult to say without hearing them or seeing the insides. From the 80's onwards when Philips controlled the brand, PYE in Australia was mostly used as a budget brand, although occasionally there were still some gems with the PYE brand on them. Are the driver cones & surrounds in good condition?
Teflonso Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) Im not entirely sure, I tried pulling the cover off the front but it felt like something was going to snap, I have no idea how thats mounted on there, and cant figure out any way of opening up the cabinet without hacking up the timber. One thing I can confirm 100% is that these havent been used once since the early to mid 90's and were in my family's posession no later than 1971, so they're definately not Philips jobs. I recall the top of the amp/turntable/radio/hifi unit? saying "MR2" or something similar. I'll try get some photos up tomorrow. Edited November 26, 2013 by Teflonso
emesbee Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 Looks to me as if those grilles might not be original, just judging by the fact that there is quite a large gap between the grilles and cabinet surround. If so, who knows how they've been fitted. (But I could be wrong, of course.)
Teflonso Posted November 26, 2013 Author Posted November 26, 2013 As poxy as the covers look in these pics, they're original. They dont look quite as dodgy in person, and the blinding silver badge mounted on the cloth has PYE on them. Definately a strange design though, and haven't seen anything similar before
surprisetech Posted November 26, 2013 Posted November 26, 2013 No suggestions from me on how to remove the grilles unfortunately, but it would be good if you can figure it out. Once you've got the grilles off you can inspect the driver cones properly, and also remove the woofer and have a look at the crossover. Speakers this age usually need the Crossover caps replaced. If you get that far, post a pic of the crossover and we can make some suggestions. In the meantime, grab some DIN plugs and just have a listen to them.
Teflonso Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Ill definately have a listen asap then take it from there... They still have the original DIN plugs connected however the original HIFI unit is missing the needle for the gramophone, so I need to find either a DIN > RCA aDaptor or re wire different connections so I can play them through a different amp.
