mixdownsize Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Tannoy System 10 & System 8 (5.0 Surround Set) 5.0 (L-C-R-Ls-Rs) Speaker Set. 3 x System 10’s (L-C-R) 2 x System 8’s (Ls-Rs) I purchased these as a set from a sound post-production studio liquidation in early 2009. As there were no boxes, paperwork, receipts or invoices included in the sale, I had our studio technician bench and test them. Everything was in good condition. Ever since then, they have faithfully served as my master reference monitor speakers on literally thousands of hours of television, DVD, Blu-ray and OTT/streaming originals, 5.1 surround mixes, remasters from theatrical source stems, deliverable creation, pre/post QA reporting and critical/forensic listening and analysis. They have been the final point of approval to every major film studio and streamer globally. They were individually powered by 5 x Bryston 4B SST Pro’s in ‘Bridged’ mode. (These are also listed for sale here on stereo.net) They were always mounted in our professional studio, climate controlled, smoke-free, pet-free and child-free. The system was hardware limited to 79 dBFS, with a weekly calibration check using ‘Smaart V8’. On the weekends, the L & R channels were my stereo (2.0) background music / quiet listening system. (The dreaded paperwork) The cabinet construction is an example of the unbridled early 90’s pursuit of sonic excellence with heavy well-constructed cabinets and acoustically neutral outer surfaces with an internally cross braced and reinforced matrix. Each System 10 cabinet weighs-in at 21 kg unboxed and each System 8 cabinet is 13 kg unboxed. These speakers use Tannoy’s Dual Concentric drivers, which is two drivers physically merged into one. The high frequency unit is positioned on the back of the low frequency driver so that they are effectively on the same axis which delivers even dispersion in the horizontal and vertical planes, providing exceptional off-axis performance. Although we were fortunate enough to have several studios with different brands and types of passive and active surround speaker setups in our facility, My reason for having these as my primary reference speakers was that after multiple tests across a broad range of clients and source material, I found that I was able to achieve the most accurate, transparent and translatable mixes and final masters that worked across multiple formats with a harmonic palette that is very hard to match at any price point, even today. They are extremely easy to tune and calibrate and are not fatiguing during critical listening sessions. If you power them appropriately with a capable A/V amplifier or dedicated power amplifiers, they will provide you with an accurate, flat, detailed and truthful reproduction of your source material. This is a very regretful sale of a trusted and loved set of speakers. Condition: All photos were taken in direct midday sunlight to try and give you the best representation of their cosmetic condition. Cosmetic: Good These were always handled with white glove care and their condition is exactly the same as the day I bought them, except for the Centre Speaker cabinet front top, right lip was split damaged by road-case lid while packing up after a job at a studio in the U.S and relocating back to Australia. This was repaired by Greg and the lads at Speaker Hospital in 2015/2016. They used wood from a ‘donor’ cabinet I had to fill and seal the split, then blended the paint colour to match. See photo of front top, side by side. This was taken from 10cm away in full light. It is not noticeable in ‘normal’ light. Grille cloths, frames and studs are all in excellent condition and are original. Electronic: Excellent Each speaker was benched and tested by our studio tech annually. I would prefer to sell these domestically to a passionate Tannoy enthusiast to use for a monster home theatre system or a revealing, detailed and accurate surround music listening system. However, if the buyer would like them shipped, Buyer Pays Packaging, Freight and Insurance: Directly to Pack and Send or other designated and mutually agreed freight packaging and forwarding company within a 15km radius of Baulkham Hills, NSW, 2153. For box packing service, freight costs, full handling and transport insurance including tracking and signature on delivery. Although we have already closed our studios, started downsizing and moving house, I can facilitate a visit to inspect and test them yourself if you are able to bring your own source, small pre and power amp along.
