A question for the projector specialists.

I turned on my trusty JVC X9500 projector last night and it started up as normal but after reaching the blue screen it shut down with lights blinking. The lamp (orange) and warning (red) lights are flashing 3 times. I tried to insert a video but can't so took some photos.

The lamp has done just over 3000 hours so should have a tiny bit left in it.

The manual says the flashing lights indicate "abnormal circuit operation". I cleaned the filter but no change.

Is this the end for this wonderful projector? Is it worth repairing?

Would start with powering it off at the wall for 10 minutes, then try again.

Yes I did that. Even left it overnight. No change.

OK, needs a service then. The ballast is the most likely culprit and worth repairing.

Sorry to hear. Yes I would get it fixed and never part with it. Sounds like the common ballast issue they had. I doubt the light engine failed.

It looks like it's worth repairing.

I'm in the country and hate going to Perth.

Can anyone recommend a good repairer to take it (or better yet Post it) to?

Luckily I had my old Benq W10000 here and I installed that this afternoon. At least it's something to watch while the JVC gets repaired.

There were 3 service agents in WA, this list is a bit old and not sure if close by for you but worth a call to find out.

Qld has only 1 agent left. Have customer north of Cairns has to send back the Gold Coast for repairs.

This is the assessment I received from a repairer in Perth.

We have assessed your JVC projector and the issue is the Processor board assembly. It will be an additional $3498 (GST included) to repair (for parts & labour, $120 assessment fee already deducted).

Seems excessive to me and probably more than the projector is worth.

What do others think?

Agree, too much to spend when other issues may occur. You could pick up a brand new Epson TW9400 for not much more. If the budget is there, the new JVCs also throw a very nice image.

I should have said, I have already purchased a runout Sony VW 590ES at a good price so I would have sold the JVC anyway. I'm glad I didn't wait for the repair quote.

The Sony has a nice picture but I'm not sure it's as sharp as the JVC and certainly doesn't have anywhere near the brightness.

Can anyone suggest where I could buy a processor board and repair it myself?

Ali express perhaps.. or someone like Kris Deering would know.. You'd need a part number of some sort... Not sure what's in the board itself but $3498 is more than entire projector's cost of production so no way is that fair. If I can get you one you can have it at cost if you want me to inquire.

Have you thrown up some test patterns to set up the sony? You are right though, I always found myself using the bright cinema or bright tv modes on those 500 series as they did lack brightness, so you then destroy any black levels you had going out of best mode. They also lacked depth where the JVCs had that nailed with the x series machines. They should have kept them going tbh.. though might take the shine off the new ones. Best lenses I've seen where on the 7500 and 9500 units, only the benQ LK970 was a bit better but really because of no convergence issues being single chip dlp.

Tony Dummett's test patterns for the A-lens he used to build! I still use these to setup and check focus and convergence.
