Another CD I  picked up today (in a 2nd hand rack).

Fatoumata%20Diawara%20-%20Fatou.jpg?1316

Malian singer/songwriter Fatoumata Diawara's 2011 debut album. Quite a nice album. Her style is not unlike fellow Malian singer Rokia Traore, although I think Fatoumata's voice is somewhat more melodic sounding. A pretty good album overall, and a good effort from the backing musicians too. Good rhythms and some nice guitar work. Has a sort of 'African jazz' feel in places. There are a few names I recognise. Sola Akingbola (Nigerian percussionist from Jamiroquai - check out his 'Routes to Roots' CD) appears on a number of tracks. Toumani Diabate plays kora on one track, and John Paul Jones plays bass on another. Nicely recorded with a well balanced mix between the vocals and backing tracks.

My personal favourites are track 2, 'Sowa', which has a nice blend between the vocals and lively rhythms, and track 7, 'Alama', which highlights Fatoumata's vocals with just acoustic guitar.

ah, Songlines, been a subscriber for quite a few years now, the reviews section is a very dangerous place to go!

Issue 100 just arrived. Imed Alibi's Safar album looks very promising

Imed's producer/guitar maestro Justin Adams, check out his albums too

If you haven't bought Roberto Fonseca's Yo album already do it now! He was sensational at Womadelaide.

Also saw Toumani Diabate a few years back, at Womad, jaw droppingly amazing!

Hi Ian McP

I get my Songlines through my newsagent,so I'm always a month late. You're right about the reviews section. It's been responsible for me dipping my hand into my pocket on many an occasion:-)

Roberto Fonseca was my favourite act at this years Womadelaide.I picked up a copy of Yo there and Roberto signed it for me.;-)

Songlines worth subscribing to, takes a while to get to the far antipodean reaches though.......

newsagent's/record store price here in Melbourne around $15, subscribed price around half that.

the wait's worth it, meanwhile I read their website

www.songlines.co.uk

Guilty plea: usually way cheaper to buy their recommendations direct from amazon than hunt them down locally.

Discurio now Title (Hardware Lane, Melbourne) was a good place to source many of Songlines reviewed cds

though Max the manager who knew the world music genre well has now left. Basement Discs is OK but more of a rock oriented store.

I loved Discurio.A knowledgable bunch in there.Haven't been in there since 2011.I must subscribe to Songlines one day.I have all of their mags plus a couple of their earlier ones in the smaller format before they folded and started up again. I must check out their cd shop soon, now that they have one up and running.
