darthlaker Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 HRS EXRD Rack..... Loving no middle support at the front. Also lowered my noise floor. 14
Steever Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 A bit more work on my TT stand in the last couple of days saw a 10kg ballast added. It’s now complete but won’t be used in anger for a few weeks yet until our house move and minor redecorations are done. 3

Allan Posted January 12, 2024 Posted January 12, 2024 (edited) @darthlaker you would benefit big time with some absorption, particularly with side 1st reflection absorption. It will open the stage right up. Has your turntable been to the vet, whats that shroud over the headshell? Noice system Edited January 12, 2024 by Allan

LOL re the vet shroud. It’s an acoustical systems cartridge “protector”/thing! 1
Guest Moon 600i V2 Posted January 30, 2024 Posted January 30, 2024 I use a Lovan AV rack with the hollow bits filled with expanding foam. The Rega wall shelf makes the biggest difference. Some components have a Gutwire Notepad for resonance control but I don't really hear a difference over the addition of Superspike footers to the Marantz.
RhettM Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 Has anyone tried to use Ikea Platsa for a hifi rack / vinyl storage?

Xecuter Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 Ended up shoving a massive red gum slab across two sound style racks I had. Giving me the space I needed for the TT and tube amp. Just need more gear to fill the shelves and add mass to the rack. 8 1

They’re Dominos. Biscuits look like this: Dominos like this: Biscuits great for quickly strengthening widening joints, ie. making a ‘wider’ piece of timber from narrow boards. Dominos good for that too and most places that mortise and tenon joints (and often other joints) would have been used. Very versatile. Kind regards, Michael Edited April 26, 2024 by SPR08Y 3 1

Gabehcuod Posted April 27, 2024 Posted April 27, 2024 Any suggestions for a sturdier rack with another tier. Ran out of room with this one, and I have two 40kg amps on the floor in another room. You can see it's already bent on the second tier. The only solution i've seen with enough space is from solidsteel but I can't justify spending $1800 on it.

It will cost more if that second tier breaks, "damage to your HiFi gear", $1800 seems reasonable compared to some racks out there, if it suits your needs why not. Otherwise look for something used, that may come up on SNA classifieds. 1
Dr.Funk Posted April 27, 2024 Posted April 27, 2024 I built this Sheoak rack a few years ago. The bottom and middle shelves are mortice and tenon frames surrounding solid Corian (the table material most people are used to seeing in McDonalds). The Corian has a sorbothane gasket underneath it, sitting on the Sheaok frame. This was my way of reducing the 'liveliness' that could have come from the open space within the cabinet. All the frames are mortice and tenoned and the end panels are floating within the frame, allowing for seasonal movement. The same can be said for the solid top, which was secured with figure 8 plates, which allow the top to move. The foot shape is called a French Sabre and I put a threaded insert inside , so that the foot has leveling isolation spikes that can be attached. The Sheoak timber came from Margret River, south of Perth. I went and chose the boards myself. An interesting fact is that Sheoak changes colour depending where in W.A it grows. In the south west the soil has a large clay content so the boards can be as dark as Jarrah, in the north, where the soil is more sandy, the colour can be a salmon pink! I am a cabinetmaker by trade and I took commissions for hi-fi furniture. This work has dried up as people now make their own DIY or convert Ikea furniture. No one seems to want to spend money on quality hand made one-offs. I made matching miniature stands for the monobloc amps that went with this setup. I made an MDF box, which contained very fine sand, that had been baked dry in the oven (wife thought I was mad!). The box was then sealed using an elastic compound so no sand could escape and a matching Sheoak frame, constructed the same way as the larger cabinet, was built around the box. It had matching Corion tops, with miniature French Sabre legs. Each stand weighed 25kg. Now and again I get asked to make vinyl storage boxes, tonearm plates and plinths for Linn's, my last real hi-fi job was a composite lamination for a Commonwealth plinth. A cabinetmaker never retires, the workshop at the end of the garden always beckons. 11 1
Hydrology Posted April 27, 2024 Posted April 27, 2024 (edited) I've decided to move away from the current cabinet (in the first picture), to three of the racks in the second picture (as per colour/finish) Will not require the top shelves to ensure they fit underneath the TV. The gear in the second picture is NOT mine by the way!!! The leather couch on other wood accents in the existing room mean that the new racks will be a good visual match.
