Further Information

A rare and beautiful sounding Mark Levinson ML-1 class A preamp circa 1978. It includes the very special class A, MC phono modules. Also included is the external power supply, and two pairs of pairs of lemo to RCA plugs.

I havent tried an MM with it, only MC's. But There are other moudles available that allow you to drive basically any cartridge, such as the A3, the D5 and the D6.

The one installed in this unit is the D6 it's a high gain module providing 60db or 66db of gain and was intended for low output cartridges. The manual lists typical input impedances for this module as 300 ohms.

I've attached a couple pages from the manual for reference. Hope that helps.

...and if anyone needs a good cartridge for it I have a Fidelity Research FR1-Mk3 which sounds great with it. That is the cartridge mentioned in the manual 🙂

I used to have one of these pre amps and the sound was simply amazing. One of a list of components I regret selling over the years.

Thanks, agree it sounds incredible. I found an old article from a Melbourne hifi magazine from 1978 with an ad for this preamp. It was $3500 in 1978, the price of a car basically ha. Don't start getting me to have have second thoughts 🙂

Would have been nice to try with the ML2’s I had. Alas, they now reside in Tennessee.
Most Aussies punters will overlook ML products and you might just need to advertise them on a more internationally accessed site like audiomart or audiogon.
Seems typical now of high end and collectable Hifi to have to do so.

If you get stuck, PM me. I have a contact in the US that would likely be interested.
