hi all i checked out 4k uhd blu-ray of titanic with the family on our jvc 4k projector and OMG is instant reaction. holy cr@p how good is this restoration ! this movie is from 1997 folks and looks absolutely stunning on disc with its new restored re release. Few screen shots below so can see as a taster what looks like and the photos do not do justice, this has come up amazingly well in its restoration. Stunning movie. excellent audio too thats used sparingly but to good effect ...cant believe this movie was released 1997 ! it is so well made and shot. It's no surprise this movie won 11 academy awards with its nomination of 14 !

It took me a couple of goes to end up with the titanic on disc.. first time auspost loosing it :D i can heartedly suggest if theres one disc you buy this year make it the titanic on 4k uhd blu-ray. What a knock out.

I made a comparison over the weekend with the standard blu ray and this version and I agree.

It is probably one of the best 4k re-mastered versions of a movie I've seen so far.

In my experience with 4k HDR it has been a hit and miss, sometimes half decent as I find that the colours suffer (at least with projectors) and movies look very artificial or just plain wrong. Dolby Vision does help with this and makes faces on MI Rogue Nation look a bit less orange, but with this Titanic 4k it is really, really good.

The colours were not altered, the beauty of the original remains there, it does not look artificial or enhanced in a compromising way and the image is cleaner but with lots more detail.

Totally worth getting. In addition, what an awesome blockbuster for the ages it is!

Where are you getting the discs from? I purchased a digital 4K version from The Apple Movie store for only $10.00. It looks okay but I'd rather have it on disc.

pity having this RCA, our jvc n7 has been pretty good across the board, but it does come with the scene by scene on the fly analysis and optimisation it does. good to hear that titanic 4k was spot on. its a marvellously well made movie and so well shot ! 🙂

Yes BB, my experience with 4k HDR and reproduction of it on projectors has not really been what I was expecting unless movie by movie adjustments are done manually. And even then, not all 4k HDR movies in my opinion are made the same, therefore, giving a different result movie to movie. I can see why this technology was developed for Televisions, really bright TV's seem to have it all sorted out.

This is because I prefer the natural look of colours etc that were originally intended above HDR brightness etc. This is not an issue with the good old standard Blu Ray on any movie at all.

I find that 4k HDR for most movies (at least on projectors JVC x9900 and Epson TW9400) is a compromise. Either light is too low on the entire picture (Eg: Heat 4k HDR) in order to have those brighter spots. But by doing this the entire image suffers, blacks suffer too. For instance Skyfall 4k HDR has more detail but blacks less punch and overall less contrast, in this case the standard Blu Ray looks just really good and it wins because of the colours and contrast but either version is not far from the other one.

Then on the MI Rogue Nation example, the scene after Ethan comes out of the water tank and the chase begins. Obviously there is a colour filter applied to the original movie, but the 4k version does look dramatically more orange, their faces, the white house walls look yellow and as they ride down the stairs next to the castle, it looks so unnaturally orange is hard to watch.

Dolby vision then comes and tries to balance it, just slightly better, but not that much more. The only way then is to adjust the HDR on the projector by dialing up or down. By making the entire image brighter, then colours become more natural. The faces look less orange and the castle looks more yellow as it should etc. But the HDR brightness is not there any more because now the entire image is brighter.

In comparison the MI Rogue Nation standard Blu ray version is a treat. There is nothing to adjust and it just works as it should.

So for me, although 4k HDR may work with lots of fiddling from movie to movie, I think technology should be, set up, calibrate once or twice, forget and enjoy.

Yet this Titanic 4k version is so well done it maintains the integrity of the original, but now bringing more resolution and beauty to it! Nothing to adjust here, no need for Dolby Vision or fiddling with HDR settings on the projector. Just a great classic to enjoy once again but better than ever!

I am looking forward to autumn so that we can enjoy it as a family too. I can see my daughter as well loving it.

I had a jvc x7000 myself and have helped setup a couple of Epson 9400. Main issue with these projectors is they don’t have the hdr frame by frame tone mapping optimiser which later n series has.

The jvc N series are set forget 🙂 for 4k hdr Havent touched for any movies bunged through and I watch a lot 🙂 did get pro calibrated by tony from clarity

while I have N7 the article below on N5 describes it well

https://www.projectorjunkies.com/the-ultimate-4k-hdr-experience-jvc-dla-n5/

“Frame Adapt HDR – essentially an algorithm that is run by the N5 CPU and automatically adjusts the tone mapping on each frame separately to HDR10 hardware by checking its average brightness per frame, regardless of whether or not there is meta data in the mastering.”

I have frame by frame analysis enabled

“Frame by Frame – O N5 automatically adjusts Tone Mapping by analyzing with its algorithm (firmware V3.50) the maximum brightness in each frame separately“

and also using the optimiser 🙂

and also using the optimiser set for my screen and gain

“Finally the very nice Theater Optimizer, with this slider you give the N5 the elements of your screen such as size and gain, and adjusts tone mapping accordingly calculating the brightness that should reach the eyes of the viewer, and most importantly, it works!“

this was game changer for 4k hdr and every projector i think should have it. Definitely set forget 🙂
