Zax Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 Been into HTR for some time now and originally I had a Yamaha DSP-Z9 powering my 5.1 setup of B&W 602s3 and 601s3. Well that AVR is close to 20 years old and out dated like no tomorrow. I'm switching to a component setup with Emotiva Amps A300 for the mains and a500 for the rears. I purchased a Marantz refurbished AV7705 for my Pre/Pro from A4L. Now I'm have second thoughts about buying everything I got and think maybe I should of just gone with the Cinema 60 they are selling. My budget is limited so everything I am getting is 2nd hand or refurbished if that makes sense, and i do plan on adding more speakers maybe going to a 7.2 setup in the end not entirely sure. Basically am I biting off more than I need to for this setup or am I going to be good?
Guest Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 The 7705 is excellent, missing the latest HDMI 2.1 connections for 8K video. It will serve most people very well for quite some time. However, many people prefer buying new for the warranty. Note that new AV gear depreciates faster than most in the forum Classifieds. My last 2 AVRs were purchased used.
RCADees Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 In my opinion, I think that now you have a great system with lots and lots of power. The fact that you are now using the Emotiva amps to run the speakers is a massive plus. I think this is what is ideal as the Marantz will now be doing only the processing. And as Snoopy8 says, it is about what you may need moving forward. But AVR amps do loose a lot of value, I am sure that if your circumstances change later you can change the amp for not much more money. But in my experience that is way down the track. I just upgraded from a 5.1 configuration to a 5.1.2 and I really don't see that I will be installing any more speakers any time soon, even though I could run an 11 channel configuration with a separate power amp. A well calibrated, with plenty of power 5.1 configuration will beat anytime an Atmos configuration. That bed layer is the really important part. The good thing is your amps will be running with lots of head room and I think this makes the entire experience more enjoyable. Your 7705 has Atmos and 11 channels processing and that is plenty in my opinion. There is barely (if any) content in 8k and this is used more for gaming (if any) these days. Also the HDMI 2.1 has limited use, yes, it has a massive increase in bandwidth from 18Gbps but you will also need to get new HDMI cables (48Gbps) to take advantage of it. The main game here (I think) is that you have a couple of very capable power amps doing all of the hard work and you should hear the difference. 1
Hi-Fi Whipped Posted February 15, 2024 Posted February 15, 2024 You are building a nice system. For your use of definitely keep the 7705. Assume you’ve checked the voltage of the unit if it’s an import? 1
