Merliq Posted March 12, 2024 Posted March 12, 2024 Hi all, I have a Yamaha RX-V385 which I think is struggling to drive my JBL Studio 570s and Svs Prime Centre. I’ve had to turn it up to the point it hisses and doesn’t sound great at all. I assume the amp is underpowered? I’m pretty happy with my 3.1 setup so I don’t plan on upgrading anything or future proofing. Just looking for a new 5.1 amp that can comfortably drive my speakers without breaking the bank. Just looking for suggestions! Thanks!
THOMO Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 I owned Studio 590s which are similar but bigger and they were easy to drive. My 15 watt valve amp drove them quite easily. Having said that a lot of the AV amps just do not sound very good.I had a Cambridge Audio which sounded decent. It is beyond me why most AV amps sound so bad.Even some of the very expensive ones.My experience is you are usually better off using a stereo amp and forget the centre channel. The Studio 570s are excellent sounding speakers with a big 3D soundstage. They should be more than capable of filling in the centre soundstage if fed by a decent stereo amplifier of around 50 watts. 1
Guest Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 to the forum. The Yamaha RX-V385 has rather weak amplification and poor analog outputs, which is typical of cheap entry level AVRs. What is your budget? You may be better off buying a used mid to high end AVR (with better amps, better analog outputs) than getting a new low end AVR. Other factors to consider. What is your mix of movies versus music? if more music, maybe a stereo integrated may be a better option. What are details of your room? It sounds like you have a large room because you have to turn the volume up?
muon* Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 JBL 570 Sensitivity (2.83V@1m) 88dB Frequency Response (-6dB) 45Hz-40kHz Nominal Impedance 6 ohms I agree with others, need better amplification, that AVR is just not cutting it.
Merliq Posted March 31, 2024 Author Posted March 31, 2024 It's an L shape room (upside down L I guess). 3x3 dining area and a 4.5x6 lounge. The tv/speakers are setup along the 7.5m wall. I do use them for music but definitely more for tv/movies. I was budgetting for around the $1k mark!

Having the speakers on the 7.5m wall is not ideal, but I suspect you will not be able to change that. Given you do more movies, maybe get a used NAD T758V3. It has decent power as well as Dirac Live which will help improve the audio is a shared room.
