075Congo Posted February 13, 2024 Posted February 13, 2024 Be interesting to see how many SNA Members (A) have a dedicated audio room or (B) have to contend with the family "lounge Room" like I have for basically forever. In my case I have made subtle changes (with permission). My wife likes cushions (about 40 of them)so thats my lot. "Set up to give their best?_....well. 2

Be thankful, cushions can absorb unwanted excesses and provide a nice varied reflection scattering. They can also be easily moved for maximum utility in solo/intensive listening sessions. Just imagine if she had wanted all hard stone and glass! 3 1

doogie44 Posted February 14, 2024 Posted February 14, 2024 I have a dedicated (largest) room at home in that it's tuned exactly to my system (that would be difficult to do in any other room of my house). I call it the music room, of course. Thanks to having a tolerant wife it's always OK for me to listen AND the room functions more as a family room and lounge room too. No TV, but 2 big leather lounges and a Persian rug. Listening to 'their' music and having Hip Hop/Taylor Swift/Ariana Grande dance-offs with the 8 grandchildren keeps me in touch with the outside world. I always have to keep an eagle eye on the youngest though, with the glowing valves! Only one small burn and several burst balloons so far... oh well. Quite a bit of the daytime I must listen softly to what I call 'background levels' but that's the cost of doing family/marriage business (I might then use my headphones). I always like music louder than she does. Very often I'm playing flute and harp recitals or opera excerpts for my loved one as we read together. She does draw the line at a lot of very modern music should it 'sully' the airwaves of 2MBS-FM Fine Music--particularly around dinnertime, or if she's tired. If friends come over at night the upstairs bedroom closes off nicely in an acoustic sense. Nor does the REL S/510 sub penetrate to the nether regions of the dwelling through the floor as I feared it might. The neighbours can't hear anything from this music room: bonus! At least one day a week I'm all alone in the room--with only Qobuz and a few thousand LPs and a warmed-up system--you can guess what comes after that kind of sonic foreplay! Mission Control refers to it as 'blasting" my music. But if I owned a Lamborghini of course I would drive it fast... I regard myself as extremely fortunate. It's best that we all manage to enjoy ourselves together, n'est-ce pas? 5 6
Guest Posted March 20, 2024 Posted March 20, 2024 I chose to share my music and movies in the family room, with no regrets. The key word is share. The better half cannot tell the difference in SQ but appreciates the music she likes. And we enjoy watching movies together. Had we dedicated rooms, I know it would have been used rarely.
audiodyna Posted March 20, 2024 Posted March 20, 2024 It would be nice if these lucky guys can post photos of their room. It might trigger some inspiration for whoever want to set up their own room in future. 1

BRS Posted March 20, 2024 Posted March 20, 2024 Office for main listening and separate Cinema room. My better half doesn't like my music all that much and isn't into movies at all.
RCADees Posted March 20, 2024 Posted March 20, 2024 I have a small 2.5m x 3.2m room for music only purposes. It took a great deal of effort to get to this point but it is very satisfying to spend time there and sonically perfect. If I am not using it others at home can use it for study or yoga. But it is weather dependent as well as it gets hot because of it's upstairs location, so from December to mid March it gets barely used. Downstairs lounge/kitchen area is the most shared room, movies and a good Stereo only system allows us to do both as needed as we all enjoy both music and movies. Sonically it is not as good as the dedicated room, but it could be worse, so as with everything in life it is a compromise. Happy wife, happy life. 1

My wife would go mad listening to my music collection. I spin electronic music [all sub types] regularly, but will happily jump between most genres, including metal... This is why I loved having my own space, people could come and go [and choose some tunes], but everyone knew it was my zombie box, and I was there to listen to my choices [well most of the time]. My new room should be great. Currently in the plans after purchasing a new home on the mid north coast. The home is amazing, but does currently lack the 'room' for my dedicated listening cave. So I'm going to convert a large garage space, which boasts concrete slab and generous high ceilings. Should be good. Edited March 20, 2024 by Grizaudio 3
audio buffff Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 I have one. and I also have set ups in most of the rooms in my house. Very understanding wife.
Al.M Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Most modern 4 x 2 home plans are configured with family and dedicated HT audio rooms and older homes with extra room do also. The family audiophile can make use of the HT room.
cafe67 Posted March 22, 2024 Posted March 22, 2024 Separate and I guess dedicated music, but hard to close off from rest of house 7
PicoWattson Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Yep, because I'm independent. Not decibel dependent either. Music when I like it, how I like it. No compromises in that department. Wish all the other departments were the same.

For me, the benefits of shared music / movies outweigh the challenges of a shared room. 1
AudioGeek Posted March 23, 2024 Posted March 23, 2024 Fortunate to have systems in both dedicated room and a shared space. We all spend time together in both spaces, a dedicated room does not exclude family and has other advantages.
wasabijim Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 designed and built the house. it's 'reverse living' with shared living spaces upstairs to capitalise on view. includes a downstairs 'rumpus' type room centred around the stereo but also caters to other uses - movies and gaming thru stereo, etc. the 4yr old calls it the 'dancing room' cause him and mum would get 'Just Dance' going when we first moved in. 1
ganache Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 I have a dedicated room now that the kids have all moved out. It was the downstairs family room and I was able to clear everything. The house only has two bedrooms. When guests come I assemble a king sized bed in there and lose my listening room while they are visiting. It is also quite odd shaped. The drawing was used over a phone call to install the BACCH4Mac software. 1
David A Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) I live in a 1br inner city loft apartment, so my listening room is also my living/dining room. To make that work, I placed my audio racks and tv on the landing under my stairs, with my speakers placed on the long wall. The floor is tiled over concrete. I have a rug and 3 meters long sofa on the back wall, and my stairs and wooden venetian blinds act as a sort of crude diffuser. The room acoustics are essentially pretty good sans room treatments, so I can't complain. Though I plan to replace the artwork with acoustic art panels at some stage after I finish building my new system. This was my system/room in mid-2015. The speakers are Magico S5 Mk1's. Since then the main change is I upgraded to Magico S5 Mk2's + Spods.. Edited September 22, 2024 by David A added pic 11 1

Grimmie Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Wow! Joe, That looks like it's going to be something special. Please put me on the mailing list for an invite to the unveiling get-together. 3
Steever Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 I used to have a dedicated room. And music was wonderful there. I now have licence in a shared space since moving house. I now use the system much more as a result. I've also taken my wife along on the journey and with her input, have employed room treatments to make my current system the most enjoyable and easy to use system I've had. It can be done. 3 2

Godot Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 I can understand the reasoning behind a dedicated room, but I’ve gone for a dedicated home. 2 4 1
