MattyW Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Nah, the new home I'm building will have the main system in the living room, another in my office and a 3rd in the gym. The gym will be compromised by too many hard concrete surfaces and living room + office will be timer frame supported floors so also less than ideal. I will however have a dedicated power circuit for audio in my living room and office though as well as hard wired CAT8 network cabling throughout. This should bring me a certain amount of improvement over what I've had in the past anyway so and improvement...... If I had stayed with a concrete slab I'd have had to pay for a whole lot of soil to be trucked in for fill and have it compacted. I opted to use the added for storage space instead. Less wasted space.
wen Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 Have a separate lounge at the front of the house, my music room, has acoustic insulation in the walls, we put sliding doors to isolate it. My wife has her full Rotel system at the other end of the house. 4

Less wasted space. CAT8?? fancy. I had cat6 put into most rooms. following advice that the marginal cost isn't much more some rooms got 2x runs from the central point. also see if you can increase the gauge on your dedicate hi-fi power runs. they did this for my outdoor ceiling heaters but I didn't think to consider this for the listening room. also consider getting high density (HD) fluffy insulation in all walls wherever you can even if not needed to make efficiency standards. I did extra but just the front towards the road. Wish I opted for more through out the house, doesn't cost much more in scheme of things. hope the build is / goes well. I've heard a few Brisbane horror stories lately 1
MattyW Posted September 24, 2024 Posted September 24, 2024 The build is full hebel so it’s already excellent in terms of insulation I hope the build goes well also 1
Tone Malone Posted September 27, 2024 Posted September 27, 2024 These days I find myself trying to simplify my hifi setup in our shared living room, to encourage my wife and daughter to use it more. There are definitely compromises in sound quality. My streaming set-up is far from ideal. And then there's the missed opportunity for room treatment - I'm pretty sure a corner bass trap and some acoustic wall panels would help considerably, as would a thick rug (if only the new dog would hurry up and become more reliable with her bladder ). But all things considered, I'm at peace with it. I'm grateful my family shares most of my tastes in music. And I can see myself getting the rug back soon, the dog seems to be making some progress. Gotta take the wins where you can. 9
almikel Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 I have a dedicated room. When we moved into our current house (2010), the lounge room (old Queenslander) had terrible acoustics. When I mentioned acoustic treatment in the lounge room, the boss said, "take the stereo to the downstairs bedroom and apply any treatment you want"...and it's been the stereo room ever since! Lightly constructed with a bunch of absorption and a few bands of EQ cut down low - it has awesome sound! Tight/dry bass - the sort of bass where you just want to dial it up on the remote when a track comes on with a great bass line...I love having tone controls on my remote! I transitioned the absorption treatment in my room from fiberglass to polyester. For a time my room was naked of treatment. My wife tried to listen to the stereo without treatment, and she said, "FFS put treatment back in!" Mike 5
muzzagruzz Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 (edited) Last year I’d decided to dismantle my second system from the dedicated music room and I sold off a lot of the equipment. Well, it seems I couldn’t live without a second system after all. So, it’s back, just a little different than before. Edited November 4, 2024 by muzzagruzz 6 1

I had to wait for a custom made folding desk to arrive so I could work out proper sizing for the rug. The stunning desk has arrived so now it’s time for a new rug. 1
frankn Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 Ground floor of our house minus the garage is my music room. 9m x 4.5m x 2.4m. A fair bit of acoustic treatment. 3
Flash Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 Mine is in the living/dining area. I am alone, so although it’s certainly not as ideal as a dedicated room, I have no one else to compromise with for space, setup,, or volume (not that I regularly listen at overly high levels). My place is only a small two bedroom unit, but whoever built it decided you can never have enough power circuits, haha. There are five of them, and only three outlets on the circuit I use, with HiFi/TV all that are connected. Room shape is the biggest issue, being an L, but it is what it is. I’m happy with what I have. 5

crisis Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 I have both a HiFi room for stereo and a Home Theatre (5.1) set up in a not so dedicated family room. It still is set up reasonably well though. I’ve spent a bit of time with room treatment in the stereo room. 5
Bilbo Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 I have a dedicated room but this was imposed on me by my wife. She hates my Maggies in the lounge room (barn doors as she calls them), so when we bought our current house I ensured it had a room I could acoustically treat as well as sound proof. It's my little haven from the world and I can blast night or day without disturbing anyone. After all a happy wife is a happy life apparently! 17 4 5
wen Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 @Bilbo what are the white objects on your gear?
Bilbo Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 If you mean the little containers on some of the gear, they are plastic food containers filled with fine white sand and a couple of lead sinkers to add weight. Because some of the cables are relatively quite heavy they stop the units they sit on from moving around and also act as damping which improves the bass in particular. I have tried the Bunnings door stoppers but being made of steel they have an undesirable effect on the sound. 1
wen Posted November 11, 2024 Posted November 11, 2024 This is my mofi phono with cut concrete block and a crystal on top,I placed a broken antique bottle neck with cover to mute the yellow light, now using an if zen with same setup 2 2

What amps are you driving them with?
Bilbo Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Thanks Andy. They are indeed the 20.7's driven by the Sanders Magtech power amp. 4
Flash Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Is a bit unreasonable her making you move the Maggies out of the lounge. It’s not like they’re overly imposing, or anything. 3

Guest Moon 600i V2 Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 (edited) When my wife and I were looking at new houses 22 years ago, she was puzzled as to why I always headed to the basement first. It took me two years to finish the basement to suit our needs. I divided it into thirds. Utilities, Home Theatre (TV and speakers) and man cave were all done with dedicated lines and outlets and eight inches of sound insulation. Being in Canada, the sound sometimes escapes through the vents into the rest of the house during the winter. My wife doesn't mind the background music despite having no interest in setting aside time to actually listen. She tried bringing some plants into The Cave early on but we got that sorted out pronto. Despite the supporting beam, I have a wide and deep soundstage. Edited November 13, 2024 by Moon 600i V2 Added picture and text.
frankn Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Love Canada with basements, lots of useful room to play with. We lived in Calgary for 8yrs. We all have Canadian citizenship too. 1

I told my wife that the wall and ceiling insulation was to keep noises out rather than the sound in.
