Logitech Media Server has been out of official support for several years now, but maintained by an amazing group of volunteers .   I see now that a rebrand has taken place and it is now officially https://lyrion.org.  As one of the (probably few) hangers on who like the platform and find its wealth of plugins and portability a boon, I am looking forward to seeing it continue to survive.

There are a lot more people than you realise...

I have been an LMS user for many many years. But since understanding that Roon plays with Squeezebox Touch, I have converted to Roon.

As an ex-LMS lover ... but long since converted to Roon, cost aside, what is the advantage or pros and cons of Lyrion?

My perspective, I respect that others will disagree. That's cool.

Pros:

- Free

- It plays music

- Suits old skool users, that have a well curated music collection and just want to play their collection

- Has integrations in Qobuz etc

- Open source, community support, community dev are big pro's

- Low bandwidth, low footprint. Some associate this with better sound quality. Runs on old hardware easily

- LMS users now have community support and dev once again...

- DIY and improvement aspect

- Lots of plugins, bandcamp integration etc....  which is awesome. But the integrations are hit and miss.

Cons:

- Dated control and interface

Once you have used Roon, its impossible to fully enjoy the LMS

Even running Material Skin, useability is severely lacking.

For me simple navigation and the lack of discovery kills the experience.

- No aggregation of content

- Music discovery is non existent [this is a massive con]

- Qobuz integration is very average, simple tasks like hearting etc, are not intuitive at all

- General music navigation is also lacklustre

- No internal DSP, requires third party addon's which is not too big of a deal

- Dev is low/slow

- Features and plugins are dated

If LMS could deliver 90% of Roon I would really consider it, but its just not in the same league.

I gave LMS a go after using Roon for a year [why, because I was curious to see if LMS had improved...... 2 weeks in and I flipped back to a Roon.

Thanks @Grizaudio - it doesn't sound like its evolved much from LMS days then.

It was amazing at the time - the days of pre-Roon. I built a few dedicated LMS server/streamers myself back in the day.

Doesn't sound like I'm missing anything, but I'm pleased the torch has been carried on for those not wanting to pay the price of entry to Roon (understandable).

Not sure there are any major changes right now beside the name change - relative to LMS.

Everybody's mileage may vary, but besides cost?  My personal take is that the cost side of Roon hasn't yet given me enough of a leg-up on the metadata & browsing experience to make me move to Roon.  Mind you, I don't mind mucking around a bit to get plugins installed to get song lyrics (Song Lyrics), next tracks (Don't stop the music, with last.fm), Spotify (for when I have to play some of the rest of the family's playlists).

And the material skin is good enough for me.

Otherwise, of course there are flame wars still on the net about how much {better|worse} sound quality is with different players...  ;)
